Angie Gutierrez Is One of Rey Mysterio's Harshest Critics & His Wife of over 20 Years

It has been 20 years since wrestling legend Rey Mysterio joined the World Wrestling Entertainment circuit. During that time, he has gone through all kinds of experiences, but one thing has remained constant: his wife and one of his harshest critics, Angie Gutierrez.

Oscar Gutierrez, known as Rey Mysterio, is a professional wrestler who has performed in various wrestling rings. His journey in wrestling began at 14 when he featured on the independent circuits. While going through the courses, he used the "Lucha libre" style, which helped it grow in popularity and establish cruiserweight wrestling.

When he was 22, he married Angie Gutierrez, and they started building a family together. However, their relationship is not only limited to their marriage, as Angie has been very vocal and active in her husband's career.

Angie Gutierrez Is Older Than Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio began his pursuit of Angie while they were still in high school. In his autobiography, the wrestler revealed some difficulties in his quest to win her over, as she was older than him both in age and at different stages in high school levels. He said:

"There were complications. Angelica or Angie, as I call her sometimes, was a little older than me, already in her last year of high school. And she had a boyfriend."

The age difference and Angie's boyfriend were not the most significant obstacles. It was her mother who Mysterio thought was intimidating and very strict. Her husband, Angie's father, had passed away when Angie was just six. Hence, as a single parent, she had to be extremely careful with her children.

Angie has been involved in a few of her husband's shows where she has played the role of Angie Mysterio. She made her first appearance in the WWE 2005 "Summerslam" with her son, Dominic, and the late Eddie Guerrero shortly before he passed away that same year.

Her next appearance was in a 2017 episode of the "Lucha Underground" wrestling series. She made eight further appearances on WWE Raw from 2020 to 2022. Rey Mysterio enjoyed having his wife perform with him and has always appreciated her support and interest in his work. He noted:

"It was a lot of fun to watch Angie being taped. She's always been one of my toughest critics, giving me comments and suggestions for everything I do on TV. Her advice is usually pretty good."

Angie and Rey Have Been Married For Over 20 Years

Angie and Rey Mysterio's relationship began differently for them. While Mysterio was convinced that he was in love with Angie from the first moment they met, Angie was a bit more cautious with her feelings. Although she knew she liked him, she still had to learn to love him, which did not happen instantly.

However, Mysterio proved to be quite a patient man, especially when he knew she had a boyfriend who was training to be a doctor, and no one thought he would ever be famous at that time. In addition, Angie initially saw wrestling as a lower former of entertainment. Still, his patience and persistence paid off, and he got his girl.

The lovebirds married in Tijuana, Mexico, on May 11, 1996. A traditional Catholic wedding, it was attended by family and friends. Angie's mother gave them her blessings as she had finally warmed up to her son-in-law after a rocky start. They have also grown closer over the years.

Angie Gutierrez Has Two Children

The couple has two children together. Their firstborn, Dominic Gutierrez, came about a year after their wedding on April 5, 1997. He was followed by his sister Aalyah, who was born three later on August 20, 2001.

Just like his father had followed in his uncle Rey Mysterio Sr's footsteps, Dominic has continued the family's legacy in wrestling by also following in his father's footsteps. He began his life as a professional wrestler in 2020. He fought experienced campaigner Seth Rollins in his debut on WWE Raw.

Rey Mysterio and Angelica Gutierrez have had an excellent relationship that began in the most unlikely way. When they met, Angie was in another relationship with a future doctor, and Ray was still just a small-time local wrestler. Angie is also older than Ray, which complicated things because her mother thought he was immature.

However, they managed to overcome that and ended up together. Angie even appeared in several of her husband's shows, yet she didn't even like wrestling when they met. Now married for more than two decades, they are still going strong and have been blessed with two children whom they adore.
