Kids Risk Their Lives to Save Mom Attacked by an Armed Intruder: 'It Was Really Scary'
When Rachel Moore's five kids were about to go to bed one night, she heard an intruder entering her house. The mother quickly gathered her children and hid with them in a room, unaware that her babies would save her from dying minutes later.
Rachel Moore fell in love with Daryl Fields, and the couple spent seven years together. The two lived together in Brisbane, Australia, with their five children. Fields reportedly loved the kids unconditionally and his wife even more.
However, things started to go downhill between the couple, and they ultimately decided to part ways. At first, their separation was friendly, but things took a different turn the day Fields did the unthinkable.

The Family
After Fields and Moore parted ways, the children stayed with their mother. The eldest kid, Jayden Caulfield, was 14, while his brother, Cameron Caulfield, was 12 when an unexpected incident changed their lives forever.
Their younger sister, Kaylea Caulfield, was ten, and the babies, Zayn and Samantha, were four and two years old, respectively. The five children happily lived with their mother until a horrific scene unfolded before their eyes one night.

A Usual Day
Moore was preparing her children for bedtime on April 11, 2014, when she heard a loud screech in the driveway. Her motherly instincts immediately kicked in, and she rushed to the bedroom with her kids and locked the door.
Moore knew her ex-husband had parked his car in the driveway, but she had no idea why he had stopped by her house in the middle of the night. What he did next was something she had never imagined would happen. Kaylea recalled:
"We could hear him walking through, and it was really scary."

The Intruder
While Moore and her children felt their hearts race, Fields entered their house and began searching for them. Then, the armed intruder entered the bedroom and looked into his ex-wife's eyes.
Instead of hiding from the armed intruder, the children risked their lives to save their mother.
Moore had no idea what was going on in her ex-husband's mind. She could only think of her children because she wanted to protect them. The caring mother wasn't aware that the man she once loved now intended to take her life.

No Mercy
When the kids saw Fields standing at the bedroom door, they begged him to spare their mother, but he didn't listen to them. Instead, he went ahead and did what he had planned. Moore said:
"He didn't think twice."
The children were horrified to see their injured mother on the ground. The man they loved and looked up to had done something they had never expected. Instead of hiding from the armed intruder, the children risked their lives to save their mother.

The Little Army
"I thought it might have been the end for the whole family," Cameron recalled. He said that his body "decided" to act and stop what was happening before it was too late.
Before Fields could continue his violent act, Cameron got up, ran towards him, and disarmed the man twice his size. Cameron and his siblings, Jayden and Kaylea, took acting lessons where they learned how to fight. Cameron revealed:
"I got taught two weeks earlier, I think."

Protecting Their Mother
After disarming Fields, the little boys stopped him from hurting their mother. They applied their martial arts knowledge and tried their best to save their mother. Meanwhile, four-year-old Zayn carried little Samantha and hid with her under the bed.
Moore was unconscious while her children tried to protect each other and her from getting hurt. While the boys tried to keep Fields from causing further damage, little Kaylea somehow managed to take her mother outside the house.
"I got her far away from him so that if he went back for her, the boys could stop him," Kaylea said. Then, she did something that shocked her mother. Kaylea brought a bandage and wrapped it around Moore's injured arm.

Call For Help
Kaylea also called the police for help and waited for the first responders to arrive and take her mother to the hospital. Jayden helped her explain to the police what had happened inside their house.
Soon, the police arrived and arrested Fields, while Moore was moved to the hospital. The children didn't see her for weeks while the doctors tried their best to treat her injuries.
Moore believed her children's love for her drove them to do what they did. With tears in her eyes, Moore said she wouldn't have "the guts to do what they did." She felt highly grateful for having her babies in her life.

The Brave Kids
Moore always wanted her kids to be young for as long as possible, but the gut-wrenching incident ripped their childhood away. She felt they grew up overnight because of witnessing the violent act.
When people learned about the bravery of Moore's kids, they were shocked. The authorities decided to honor the children with the Australian Bravery Awards.
While Moore underwent multiple surgeries to treat her injured arm, the court sentenced Fields to 12 years of imprisonment after he pleaded guilty.
We hope Moore and her children live a beautiful life together and they don't have to go through such a horrifying incident again.
