Johnny Depp and his first wife, Lori Anne Allison, remained on good terms after their divorce in 1985. During his public feud with Amber Heard, Lori came to Johnny's defense and set the record straight about abuse allegations.
Before Johnny made a name for himself in Hollywood as a highly decorated actor, he was a twenty-something-year-old married to Lori, an aspiring musician turned actress turned successful makeup artist.
While some of Johnny's other relationships have been in the public eye, Lori has chosen to live a life out of the limelight. She turned her love for makeup into business and often shared glimpses of her personal life with her followers on social media.
Lori Anne Allison's Early Life
Lori was born on September 6, 1957, making her a Virgo. She is five years older than Johnny, and from 1973 to 1974, she attended Abbott High School. She also has a sister, Suzanne.
In May, Lori shared a throwback picture of her and Suzanne at their parents' home in Miami sometime during the 1980s. In 2019, Lori posted another photo of her sister to her feed. Suzanne wore a black tank top with a red lip as her dark locks fell down her forehead.
She dated and then married Bruce Witkin, a musician, and friend of Johnny. Bruce sang in a band and worked on films as a composer. He was behind the soundtrack for "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" in 2003, and he was a composer for "Into the Woods" in 2014 and "Jimmy the Saint" in 2017.
Suzanne and Bruce are still married, and her brother-in-law is not the only creative person in her family, as Lori is related to actor Rick Jason and pianist Peter Duchin. After high school, Lori furthered her education and enrolled at Miami Dade College.
Lori Anne Allison and Johnny Depp Met through a Rock Band
After dropping out of high school, Johnny started the band The Kids. The musical group's success picked up momentum, and soon they were the opening acts for more prominent bands such as Iggy Pop and Talking Heads. Johnny and Lori met through The Kids.
Suzanne was dating Bruce while he was the band's bassist. The Kids relocated to Los Angeles but ultimately decided to go their separate ways. However, things worked out for Johnny and Lori; they tied the knot when he was twenty, and she was twenty-five.
Lori and Johnny married in September 1983. While Lori was described as "beautiful and quiet," Johnny was the one in the relationship with the outgoing personality. Lori had dreams of breaking into the music industry like her husband, but those dreams faded after she lost hearing in one of her ears.
As a result, she left the music industry behind and set her sights on becoming an actress. She started with makeup gigs and connected with people in show business like Andy Ant over time. While Lori made her way onto television, Johnny still worked odd jobs.
Through her friends in high places, Lori helped Johnny kickstart his acting career by introducing him to Nicholas Cage. After a helping hand from Nicholas, Johnny got an audition for "A Nightmare On Elm Street" and landed a role. He said:
"It was luck, an accident. I did it purely to pay the rent."
So, Johnny put his musical career on hold to become an actor. But in March 1986, Lori and Johnny divorced. Neither shared the details behind their separation and cited irreconcilable differences in their divorce.
When speaking about his marriage, Johnny said his and Lori's marriage was not working out when they decided to end things. He was young, and although they shared a special bond, he was not sure it was love.
Lori and Johnny Remained on Good Terms After Their Divorce
Despite their divorce, Lori and Johnny remained on good terms. After his mother's passing, Lori called her ex-husband and expressed her condolences. On her Instagram account, Lori still carries Johnny's last name.
Johnny clarified that he had no regrets, that things had been fun, and that he had learned a lot. After Johnny's parents divorced, he was hurt, and it was in part the reason he rushed into his marriage with Lori. He said:
"I had the right intentions but the wrong timing."
After his highly publicized trial with Amber, Lori came to Johnny's aid and set the record straight about claims that he was abusive. During their marriage, Lori said Johnny never physically harmed her or raised his voice.
She said he was a "soft person" with a deep love for animals. Johnny had a dog during their marriage, whom Tori said he treated better than some parents treated their children.
