Country music legend Tim McGraw often mesmerizes fans with his unique voice and sentimental lyrics, but on November 2, he made headlines for a different reason altogether.

McGraw appeared at the Phillies vs. Houston Astros baseball game donning jersey #45 — his late father Tug McGraw's jersey. Tug was a Phillies legend who many say helped the Phillies win the World Series in 2008.

According to Country Rebel, Tug pitched in four of six games of the World Series, striking out ten batters in 7.2 innings. It is not the first time McGraw is paying tribute to his dad. In 2018, he honored his late dad by spreading some of his ashes on the mound before the October 26 game.

The "Humble and Kind" singer went to the game accompanied by his family, wife Faith Hill, and their three daughters, Gracie, Maggie, and Audrey. Also in attendance were McGraw's half-brothers, Matt and Mark.

Fans were excited that McGraw had attended the game, and the singer also showed his excitement by standing and waving at the fans, then hitting his chest in celebration.

Tim Was Raised by His Mom in Poverty

McGraw has never been afraid to speak about his childhood, revealing that his mother got pregnant with him while still in high school, so she had to drop out.

His mother, Betty Trimble, struggled to raise him and his two sisters, working three jobs to make ends meet. He recalls one day walking into the kitchen late at night to find his mother with her head on the table and bills scattered everywhere.

It is an image that never left him, and he could not help but think about the many similar instances he never saw. His appreciation of his mother's struggles to raise him and his siblings created a strong bond between mother and son, and he even went on to pay her a tribute with the song "I Called Mama."

She has remained his anchor even in adulthood, and even though she wanted him to go to college, she still supported him when he dropped out to pursue music.

What Is the Truth about Tim’s Parents?

For many years, McGraw believed Smith was his dad, and he went by his stepdad's name Smith, a man he describes as being good-hearted but struggled a lot with alcohol.

Speaking to Larry King in 2013, McGraw confessed that his parents were divorced, and he only learned about his biological father when he was 11. He remembers rummaging through his mother's closet and finding his birth certificate.

The name McGraw was scraped out and replaced with a hand-written "Smith." After the discovery, McGraw says his mother contacted Tug, and shortly after, father and son had lunch, but that was about it. He never got to see his father again until he was 18.

Even though McGraw and Tug remained estranged for most of his life, the "Please Remember Me" singer does not seem to have any hard feelings towards both his dads and speaks openly about them.

His tribute to Tug in 2018 and just recently in November proves that he respects and recognizes Tug as his dad despite not having a relationship.
