Marlo spoke out about the incident days later.

Fans claim Marlo made the "worst apology ever."
"That Girl" actress Marlo Thomas recently came under fire for fat-shaming actress Sherri Shepherd on her own show. Marlo appeared on Shepherd's daily syndicated daytime talk show to promote her upcoming film.
While catching up at the end of the segment, Marlo reminded Shepherd about a previous interview they had done before Shepherd attained her current weight.

"I interviewed you for my AOL show ['Mondays with Marlo'], and you used to be a big woman!" Marlo told Shepherd. She then put her hand around the "Precious" actress and blew her face out to indicate Shepherd's old size before adding:
"You've lost a lot of weight, but you've still got the boobies! That's good."
While Shepherd made light of the comment, Shepherd's staff on the show, as well as fans thought Marlo was being inappropriate and intrusive with her remarks and took to Twitter to bash her.
How Did Fans and Staffers Defend Sherri?
Shepherd was a good sport and laughed about the incident, but the staff at the show were having none of it. They quickly came to her defense, calling out Marlo for her comments.
An insider told Page Six that people had not been happy with Marlo shaming Shepherd on national TV, adding that it was like a slap in the face.
Fans, too, got involved and took to Twitter to express their opinion on the matter. One Twitter user asked Marlo to watch her words and apologize, adding:
"Coming from a woman who's had some serious work done on her face..."
Many comments from Twitter bashed the "Ultimate Betrayal" actress for fat-shaming Shepherd while she had had plenty of work done on her face. Another Twitter user, @amyoake23818438, wrote:
"@MarloThomas, look in the mirror and judge your own plastic surgery face before you open your mouth and speak on someone else. @sherrieshepherd is beautiful no matter her size. Can't say that about you anymore."
An angry fan noted how unrecognizable Marlo looked from all the plastic surgery she had done on her face, adding that older women needed to embrace their age fully.
The fan, @MaryForbes 14, felt that women should let themselves grow old gracefully instead of constantly pursuing eternal youth with surgery and injectables.
But that was not all. One Kevin Jones revealed how appalled he had been by Marlo's comments about Shepherd's size and appearance, adding:
"Horrible, unprofessional, and disgusting."
Why Won’t Fans Accept Marlo Thomas’ Apology?
Following the uproar, Marlo appeared on Fox 5 and apologized, saying she did not realize she was never supposed to say what she said. She explained that she would never tell anyone how good they looked.
Once again, fans came at her neck, saying that the apology had been anything but genuine. One fan thought that was the "worst apology ever."
They explained that the problem had been with how Marlo had waved her arms to show Shepherd's previous size and not in the compliment itself.
Another fan thought Marlo just did not get it. She noted that the problem had been in talking about Shepherd's weight. She then advised: "You just simply say 'you look great' and leave it at that. That's it."
