In 2007, Denise spoke to Today about her relationship with Alan, which had been going on since 1979, revealing how life wasn't a fairy tale even when a person had a perfect spouse. The singer's wife urged people not to make their partners their "all-in-all."

Denise also clarified that the "Him" mentioned in the title of her book was God and not her husband. The star's spouse recalled an incident when she was driving home and started crying to God that she couldn't take it any longer.

She told God she couldn't believe He wanted her family to fall apart and gave the issue to Him. Denise believed God would care for her, and things didn't change instantly, but a "sense of peace" overcame her.

Alan's wife realized she had become controlling and how she'd adopted that stance. Speaking about her husband, Denise noted how he had a strong personality and that the more his career grew, the more insecure she felt.
