Frances Conroy began her career as a teen and has won several awards for her roles on stage, in television shows, and in films. Despite being in many movies and television shows, her portrayal as Ruth Fisher in the 2001 "Six Feet Under" gained her a considerable following.

She played the role that earned her a Screen Actor's Guild Award for outstanding performance in drama series for four years before the series ended in 2005.

As she played her roles effortlessly, the actress began to garner fans, some of whom noticed the discoloration in her right eye. While some wondered about the cause, others made speculations.

After Conroy joined "American Horror Story," it was easy for fans to notice that there was something wrong with her eye. Some fans began asking questions and making speculations on social media. One fan tweeted:

"WHOA. Never noticed Frances Conroy had a glass eye. All the Six Feet Under, and now American Horror Story...it took seeing her in Nip/Tuck!"

Another fan was shocked the discoloration was her actual eye as she thought it was a contact lens. The fan tweeted:

"I didn't know that was Frances Conroy's actual eye. I thought it was some kind of crazy contact they used for creep-factor in the first #AHS."

When the creators asked Conroy to join the first season of "American Horror Story" to play Moira O'Hara, they did not want her to wear contact lenses as her discolored eye was an added advantage.

The team used her discolored eye to explain that her character died from being shot in the eye. She played a ghost maid trapped at a residence for the first season.

The actress was allegedly involved in an automobile accident once. The accident seriously damaged her right eye, and she required surgery to reverse the damage to her cornea.

Conroy had a scarred cornea, and her surgery made her eye discolored. Corneal scarring happens when there is either opacity or irregularity in the cornea limiting the cornea's ability to focus light accurately.

It is easy to disguise a scarred cornea, and the actress successfully hides hers by wearing contact lenses that match the unaffected eye. Her disguise has made the eye discoloration less evident in many of her movies.
