Marc was born in France and is the eldest of five children. In 2018, a French publication stated that Marc's late parents, Roger and Jean Chalamet, lived in Chambon, where Roger was a pastor.

According to a historian and family friend Gérard Bollon, Marc's father helped welcome young families from Norway who came to learn French before embarking on missionary work in Africa and the Pacific.

After he finished his studies at the Collège du Cévenol, Marc left Chambon and moved to the United States. He resided in New York City, where he continued his work as a journalist.
