Jamie Foxx Owes His Life to His Grandmother,

The world might know him as Jamie Foxx, but his real name is Eric Bishop. He grew up in Terrel, Texas, with his grandmother, Estelle Marie Talley, who took him in when his mother gave him up.

Not only did she provide a home for him, Miz Talley, as she was known, laid the foundation for him to grow into the triple-threat performer he is today.

Miz Talley believed her grandson was exceptional, and she invested in giving him the best chance to be great. She shielded him from negative influences in the neighborhood by enrolling him in piano lessons in Dallas. She even drove him there every week.

Miz Talley also made her grandson join the church choir, making him a better musician. The choir kept him out of trouble and got him a paying gig playing at another church.

Foxx recalls how mean he thought his grandmother was when she took all his paychecks. But when the time came when he needed a car, she handed over the money which she had apparently saved for him.

Standing next to Miz Talley's casket, the "Ray" actor acknowledged the important role his beloved grandmother had played in his life, saying:

"It didn't quite look like her. But her hands—her hands were like, wow, I remember those hands. I remember those hands slappin' the hell out of me. I remember those hands wipin' tears from my face. I remember those hands spanking me on my ass and saying, 'You get in there and you play that piano.'"

Those hands shaped Eric Bishop into the man who would be Jamie Foxx. Miz Talley gave her grandson a valuable gift of belief in himself that served him as an artist, an actor, a father, and a man.

Grandma Had His Back

Despite the tough exterior, Miz Talley was a kind soul who would take in anybody in the neighborhood who needed help. The "Collateral" star describes his grandmother as tough as she raised her grandson on her own.

She taught him discipline and gave him a foundation to be a man. She showed him how to tell his real friends from those who liked him for what they could gain from him.

Foxx learned not only to be courageous but to be there for his own children.

The actor recalls an incident when someone in the neighborhood kept "messing" with him. He didn't have a group of friends to go against the bullies, so his grandmother had his back.

She walked up to the bullies and pulled out a firearm, warning them to leave Foxx alone. Needless to say, young Foxx was shocked, but the others left him alone after that.

Ridiculous as it may seem, this event showed the comedian that his grandmother was willing to go to any lengths to keep him safe and protect his future. Foxx learned not only to be courageous but to be there for his own children, saying:

"My grandmother was willing to go to jail to make sure I was ok. I took that, when I put this in the book, you gotta be willing to go all the way for your kids. And that's why I thank Estelle Marie Talley."

The actor was inspired to write a book about being a father to his children. He describes himself as a "new" kind of dad bridging the gap between the disciplines he learned from his grandmother in Texas and the unique challenges of raising daughters today.

Foxx the Hero

Jamie Foxx left Texas to pursue his second-grade dream of being a stand-up comedian and musician, but the road to greatness is never a straight line.

He moved to San Diego to go to school and built a name for himself on the comedy circuit, making impressions of famous people. Later, he would catch the attention of Keenan Wayans and join "In Living Color."

Corinne Marie Bishop, 28, is following in her dad's footsteps in Hollywood.

He made a name in TV, even getting his own show, "The Jamie Foxx Show," that ran for five seasons. As he grew as an actor, he pursued music, released albums, and collaborated with artists like Kanye West. He became a sought-after face in movies after performances in "Any Given Sunday" and "Ali."

His spot-on portrayal of soul music icon Ray Charles in "Ray" earned Foxx an Academy Award. In that season, he lost his grandmother. That cemented within him the principles by which Miz Talley raised him. In 2016, the "Jarhead" actor saved a car-crash victim from a burning vehicle. Speaking to the press, a rep for the actor said:

"Jamie didn’t hesitate. He jumped out and ran to the car."

The victim, who had significant head, neck, and chest injuries, was driving under the influence. He hit a drainage ditch, causing his truck to roll and catch fire. His family was relieved that Foxx was not only there but put his life on the line to save their kin. On his part, Foxx said that what he did just came naturally, and he was not trying to be heroic.

Jamie Foxx is a blessed dad to two daughters who have taught him much. Corinne Marie Bishop, 28, follows in her dad's footsteps in Hollywood and is an actress, a producer, and a DJ. The actor's 14-year-old daughter, Anelise, is almost as tall as he is. She plays the piano and guitar and is also a gifted basketball player.
