Mavis and Jay's Love Story and his Unconventional Proposal

At the iconic Comedy Store in Los Angeles, Mavis first laid eyes on her future husband, Jay. She had been invited to the club by a friend, hoping to find people who could provide her with work as a comedian.

Little did she know she would end up meeting the love of her life that evening. As luck would have it, Mavis and her friend were seated front and center, giving her a prime view of Jay's stand-up act.

Despite being a self-proclaimed feminist and previously believing that she would never get married, Mavis couldn't deny the attraction she felt towards the comedian.

After Jay's performance, Mavis made a trip to the bathroom and was unaware of an area near the toilet where comedians usually hung out. Jay saw her at that time.

Upon leaving the bathroom, Jay approached and asked her if she was the woman sittong in the front.. A little embarrassed, Mavis said she was the woman he was looking for.

At that precise moment, Mavis became aware that the interaction she had just had with Jay was the first time she had felt a sense of peace and belonging with another person.

When asked about her sudden change of heart regarding marriage, Mavis explained that she had just turned 34 and felt like she was past the point of needing to prove something to herself.

Jay's insurance policy played a role in the couple's decision to tie the knot. Jay wanted Mavis to be covered in the event of his untimely demise, and they decided that the easiest way to ensure this was to get married.

Mavis stated that Jay was going to buy her an engagement ring, but at the time, they had already purchased a home, so she refrained from putting any pressure on the renowned television host.

Despite not having a traditional engagement ring, Jay eventually bought Mavis a beautiful diamond ring as a token of his love. And so, the couple embarked on their journey toward happily ever after when they married in 1980.

Comedy in the Wake of a Terrifying Garage Fire Accident

On November 12, 2022, Jay made headlines when he suffered third-degree burns on his face and body while working in his garage with his friend, Dave Killackey.

Jay is well-known for being a car enthusiast who proudly owns an incredible collection of automobiles. At his garage, Jay and his pal were busy repairing the engine of a 1907 White Steam car.

In a recent interview on the "Today" show with host Hoda Kotb, Jay gave a detailed account of the events in the garage. He mentioned that the fuel line was clogged, and he was working on it when it made a strange noise.

Concerned about the sound, Jay asked Dave to blow some air through the line. But as soon as Dave did it, Jay got hit by a burst of gasoline. His face caught on fire due to the ignited pilot light.

Jay quickly alerted Dave that he was engulfed in flames. Without hesitation, Dave rushed to save Jay, pulling him out from under the vehicle and extinguishing the fire. Dave then put cold water on Jay's face.

Initially, both friends planned to call 911 for assistance. However, Jay ultimately chose to drive home to his wife instead of going to the hospital because he believed Mavis would need him. Jay revealed to Kotb:

"My wife doesn't drive anymore, and I didn't want her stuck and not knowing what was going on. It just seemed like the right thing to do, and I think it was."

Kotb inquired about whether Jay loved his wife more than his well-being, to which Jay responded with a bit of humor, "Yeah, that's it," and then went on to say, "Well, I think there's something to that."

While Jay refused the idea of going to the hospital, Mavis encouraged him to go and seek treatment. Jay eventually went to the Grossman Burn Center in West Hills, California.

He reportedly suffered relatively severe burns on about seven percent of his body, affecting his face, chest, and hands. According to Dr. Peter Grossman, temporary skin grafts made from human cadaver skin were used to aid Jay's recovery.

Grossman mentioned that in the future, Jay might require surgery to recover from his injuries fully. The comedian was hospitalized for ten days and spent eight hours a day in a hyperbaric chamber, which uses oxygen to aid in the healing process.

Jay quickly released a statement to his fans saying he was okay and would need one to two weeks to get better. Mavis reportedly visited him every day while he was in the hospital. She supported him throughout the entire ordeal.

According to Grossman, Jay had a high pain tolerance and never complained about his discomfort. The physician lauded him for his graciousness and friendliness and noted him as a "very stoic individual."

Jay maintained a positive mindset and never worried about the potential changes to his appearance while recuperating in the facility. He quipped that he doesn't look like actor George Clooney.

He also joked that it would be a big problem if he looked a lot like the handsome actor. Jay has complete faith in experts in the medical field, so he was unconcerned about the circumstances.

After being discharged from the hospital on November 21, Jay returned to his stand-up comedy routine at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California, on November 27.

Jay eventually took a trip back to the hospital to express his gratitude to the medical staff and to thank them with a box of cookies. He left the building with what appeared to be a box filled with gifts which he put in the trunk of his car.

After leaving the caregiver's office, the comic stopped at a Chick-Fill-A drive-thru and happily waved a peace sign to the media while placing his order.

Jay shared his thoughts on the incident he experienced in a Wall Street Journal column, suggesting that it's okay to joke about it and that others will likely laugh along. He emphasized that the incident was purely an accident.

Jay believes accidents are a normal part of any job involving manual labor. He also pointed out that there is always a "risk factor" for injury or harm in any activity, including playing sports like football, emphasizing that it is common occurrence in the real world.

The comic remained authentic while discussing his unpleasant experience and mentioned that he did not want to be viewed as a complaining celebrity. He added:

"I don't want to be one of those people. 'Oh, I have all these cars and beautiful house and look what happened to me.' People would be like, 'Shut up!'"

Among Jay's well-wishers was President Joe Biden, which Jay noted was "very nice." The veteran comic recounted his amusing conversation with the president: "I said, 'I'm surprised you don't have more important things to do. Thank you, Mr. President. I appreciate it!'"

Even after the terrible accident, Jay's love for his cars and the pleasure he gets from working on them didn't change. The accident couldn't dampen his enthusiasm for all things automotive.

Going Back to Their Routine after Jay's Burn Injury

Nearly a month after the accidental garage fire that left Jay with third-degree burns, he and his wife appeared to have fully recovered and returned to their everyday routines. Jay and Mavis were spotted shopping together on a recent trip to the grocery store in Los Angeles.

Elegant as always, Mavis wore a black coat and a multicolored scarf that added a pop of color to her ensemble. Her shimmery top and blue pants were paired with practical black shoes, the perfect choice for a day of grocery shopping.

The couple was seen carrying multiple bags as they left the store. Having overcome many challenges together, Jay and Mavis proved to be the epitome of a loving and supportive couple, always putting each other's needs first.

It's no wonder that Jay has sage advice for others seeking a lasting and fulfilling partnership. He advises men to "marry their conscience," and they should find the person they wish they could be forever, and in the end, their relationship will turn out okay.

For the iconic TV host, finding someone who inspires you to be the best version of yourself is crucial. Jay and Mavis have clearly found that in each other, as their marriage has stood the test of time.
