Michelle Wie's Husband Jonnie West Also Had a Career in Sports like His Wife
Michelle Wie is a talented golfer who began playing the sport at a young age. Besides succeeding in her professional career, Wie has an incredible personal life. So who is Michelle Wie's husband, and for how long have they been together?
Jonnie is the son of former NBA star Jerry West, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1960 to 1974. Jonnie also followed in his father's footsteps and made a name for himself; he has a career in the sports industry.
Michelle Wie's husband is the Director of Basketball Operations for the Golden State Warriors. Before that, he served as the Associate General Manager for Santa Cruz Warriors. Jonnie's passion for sports began way back; he has a degree in sports management and an MBA in business administration from West Virginia University.
Mr & Mrs. West, since 2019
Wie and Jonnie exchanged their vows in August 2019 after dating for a couple of years. Their wedding ceremony, which some well-known athletes attended, was held on a weekend in Beverly Hills, California. Some of the attendees included Jonnie's father and NBA star Stephen Curry.
In 2019, she[Wie] got a two-year layoff due to chronic wrist injuries, which she thought would become permanent when she became pregnant.
Professional golfers in attendance included: Jessica Korda, Danielle Kang, Alison Less, Marina Alex, and Alison Walshe. Their wedding came after Jonnie had popped the question in March 2019 in San Francisco and Wie shared the good news with her fans through a series of engagement photos on her Instagram page.
The bride, elegantly dressed in her white gown, stole many people's attention with her charming smile. Wie's longtime coach David Leadbetter stated that he was happy to witness Wie's wedding and that having known Wie for more than half of her life, she would make a great wife and mom.
Almost a Year after the Wedding, They Welcomed Their Daughter
The couple welcomed their first child on June 19, 2020, almost a year after their wedding. Wie, a five-time LPGA winner, took to her Instagram to announce the birth of their daughter. She captioned:
"Kenna baby, I have waited my entire life to meet you. Makenna Kamalei Yoona West, your daddy and I love you more than any words can describe. You are our entire 🌎 we can’t wait to watch you grow."
Michelle's Husband Supports Her in Her Sport
Balancing motherhood and career can be pretty challenging at times, but Wie chose to fight for her career and still be a present mom to her daughter. Though it's not easy being a working mom while attending to a young baby, Wie has the support of her mother and husband.
Wie's career was slightly affected after she welcomed her daughter. In 2021, the LPGA pro struggled with her right wrist after surgery. As a result, she missed the cut in all three of her starts in the season.
Nevertheless, Wie became a pro in golf before she turned 16 and had already made it to the final rounds of her first major tournaments. In 2009, she won her first tournament at 20 and more matches after that, including the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.
Her last tournament to win was the HSBC Women's World Championship in 2018. In 2019, she got a two-year layoff due to chronic wrist injuries, which she thought would become permanent when she became pregnant.
Because of that, Wie told her husband that she had given up on playing and had planned to retire. But Jonnie gave her hope and encouraged her to think through it.
Jonnie is among children whose parents are former athletes. Klay Thomspon's and Jordan Poole's parents also dominated the sports industry back in the day.
