Karrueche Tran was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 17, 1988. Her mother, Cindy Adamson, is Vietnamese, and her father, DeVon Minters, was African American. Karrueche commented:

“I love [having parents of different ethnicities] because it helped me grow so diverse and accept different cultures.”

And yet, the actress confessed, there were times in her life when she felt displaced in both communities -- not Asian enough for the Vietnamese, not Black enough for the African Americans.

Karrueche Tran's Parents Divorced When She Was Little

Cindy Adamson and DeVon Minters divorced when their daughter was very young, and from then on, Minter was not involved in Trab's day-to-day life. Her Jamaican godmother helped Adamson raise her and added another layer to the actress's ethnic diversity.

Adamson and Minter's biracial relationship inspired them to give their unique child a unique name, so while other little girls her age were Ashley or Diana, or Pamela, they named her Karrueche, a name they made up, leading the actress to joke:

“I don’t know what drugs they were on.”

After the divorce, Adamson remarried, and her new husband is an English man. And The two welcomed a son, Karrueche's half-brother, who is ten years her junior.

Karrueche Tran Knew Her Father, Devon Minters, Was Gay since She Was in Middle School

Even though she was closer to her mother and godmother, who raised her, Tran had a good relationship with her father. She was in middle school when she realized that her father was gay. She revealed:

“I knew something was different, and I don’t know how I knew or even how I knew what gay was, being so young.”

Sadly, Minters passed away in January 2023 while the actress was at the Sundance Film Festival to promote Steven Soderbergh's sci-fi thriller, "Divinity," in which she co-starred with Bella Thorne, Stephen Dorff, and Scott Bakula.

The actress posted a sweet tribute to Minters on Instagram, sharing a gallery of photos of herself and her father through the years and wishing him a sweet rest in Paradise.

“I was always somewhere in the middle. In elementary school, I identified more with my Asian side. I had a lot of Korean friends and then once middle school hit, it was a little more diverse."
