Lily's dad has long been considered one of the most controversial comedians. Famous for his squinty-eyed delivery and raspy voice, he was a man who flinched from nothing and even made jokes about 9/11, which many felt was too soon after the tragedy. He said:
"When I do a joke about September 11 or the Japanese tsunami, what's funny is that it shocks the audience. They are responding to the fact that it’s tragic, and you’re acknowledging it."

“My daughter, she’s on TikTok. So, she got me on TikTok, I have no idea what it is. I’m like talking to somebody’s grandmother about TikTok. And she’ll say, ‘I want you to do this little dance step,’ which, of course, I can never do.”
Gilbert credited his daughter with inspiring his skit on "TBS' Tournament of Laughs," in which he played a whacky dental patient and Lily and Max played the dentist and the assistant.
