Tina’s Childhood & Rise to Stardom

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock into a poor family to sharecroppers Zelma and Floyd Bullock. The couple later divorced and their two daughters were raised by their grandmother.

Sadly, Turner's grandmother passed away in 1950, and she moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to live with her mom. While there, she became a regular at Club Manhattan, where her interest in music developed.

It was there where she met her future spouse Ike and his group. When another singer was a no-show for the Kings of Rhythm recording session in 1960, Turner took over and sang the lead on the song "A Fool in Love."

They sent the record to a radio station in a New York and it got released under the moniker "Ike and Tina Turner." The song ended up in the pop charts, and the pair released more hit songs together, including "Proud Mary."

Meeting Her Husbands

Tina and Ike gradually gained popularity and tied the knot in 1962 in Tijuana, Mexico. The couple welcomed their son Ronnie two years later and had four other sons overall from previous relationships – one from Tina and two from Ike.

Despite making hits together, Tina and Ike's marriage hit rock bottom. She later revealed that he abused her physically. The duo separated by the mid-1970s and cut ties professionally, too, following an altercation in Dallas, where Tina fought back.

The two eventually divorced in 1978, with Tina citing Ike's drug and alcohol abuse, including infidelities in addition to the abuse she suffered.

Tina's career also took a knock in the following years. She disclosed she was left with only a credit card for the gas station and a mere "36 cents." As a resort to make money, she cleaned people's homes and depended on food stamps to feed her kids.

The Hollywood A-lister continued to sing, performing at low-profile venues and making guest appearances on fellow artists' records, but she barely made a success out of that.

The legendary star admitted she always buys something that catches her eye for her home, whether it be a piece of furniture or some artwork. Whatever works, she gets. Moreover, it had always been her goal and need to modify her surroundings.

Tina mentioned after her parents divorced when she was young, she moved in with other family members and settled in their back room. She brought a bedcover from her former home and some "treasures.” The future star worked hard on the space to make it her own despite the cold and hot weather conditions – and a small closet.

Tina has always done this, even on tour while going from one hotel to the next – she would "rearrange" the furniture and cover the unpleasant artwork. However, things seemed challenging with her mega-home, and she admitted she sought professional help to get everything where it needed to be.

"I don't sing. I don't dance. I don't dress up."
