A Single Mother Raised Anthony Ramos – More about the Actor's Parents
Hollywood actor and singer Anthony Ramos grew up with only one parent. His father was rarely present in the performer's life from a young age, and his mother raised him and his two siblings primarily by herself.
Ramos rose to prominence when he appeared in "Hamilton," a Broadway musical in which he played dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. He has since participated in popular productions, including "A Star Is Born" and the upcoming "Transformers: Rise of the Beast."
That is a long way from his childhood, where he spent much of it in poverty as his mother worked tirelessly to provide for him and his siblings. Ramos is very grateful to his mother, who he credits as a supportive and hard-working mother whose efforts were essential in getting him to where he is today.
Anthony Ramos' Parents Were Not Together When He Was a Child
Ramos says he grew up with his father unavailable most of the time. The few times he would see him, he would spend them trying to show his father his accomplishments and, perhaps, a seal of approval for someone Ramos thought his world was supposed to revolve around. He recalled:
"My father wasn't around a lot… When my dad was around, I really did my best to show him, like, 'Yo, Pops, look at what I've done up until this point! Check out my baseball trophies! Check out, like, this new song I just wrote!' I had the 'Daddy, daddy, look!' mentality when I was a kid."
Without much presence of his dad, Ramos' mother bore the brunt of raising him and two of his siblings. He was raised by a single mother, and the family was ravaged by perennial poverty.
They resided in a public housing development area in Bushwick, New York, called Hope Gardens. Sometimes he would go and live in Bensonhurst with his aunt and cousins.

Anthony Ramos' Mother Asked Him to Sing for the Family When He Was Little
Ramos is not shy about his humble past as a member of a low-income family of Puerto Rican descent. He says they would eat chicken, rice, and beans daily, and he would always ask his mother why that was so.
A talented baseball player in his youth, the sport may have been his and his family's way out, but at 17, his love for the game suddenly faded. He stopped making it to matches after feeling like he did not feel at home on the field anymore.
Luckily for Ramos, he had always enjoyed singing and acting and would do so recreationally on many occasions. His mother always asked him to sing for the family, and the faithful son would oblige. He would perform one of the songs he had been listening to on his CD player in the previous month or two.

Ramos' mother believed in the talents of her son. Even when things got harder for the family, with debt calls coming at them left, right, and center, she believed God would make a way. The New Utrecht High School Graduate had enrolled at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.
After all the toiling, the faith-filled duo's miracle came when Ramos received a full scholarship from the Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship Fund. He recalled when he got the news saying, "I immediately fell on my knees in the living room with my mother just praying."
Anthony Ramos Appreciates What His Mother Did for Their Family
One constant key ingredient in Ramos' life from before and after he rose to prominence is his mother, who has been there through it all. The mother-son duo enjoys an excellent and close relationship.
Ramos occasionally shares photos and messages about his mother, showing her gratitude and love. He celebrated her birthday on November 10, 2022, with a picture of them embracing and a sweet message that read, "Happy birthday Ma. Thank God for your life. Love You."
On Mother's Day in 2020, he showered her with praise saying, "Ma I love you more than you will ever know. 3 kids on your own in the Projects in Brooklyn. You fed us, clothed us, gave us shelter, and most importantly, loved us unconditionally. We didn't have much, but we had everything. Thank you Ma. I love you."
Ramos also remains close with his family members, who he regularly shares pictures of on his social media accounts. They have come a long way from their humble beginnings. Their star family member has appeared in films alongside Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Vera Farmiga, and Liam Neeson.
