‘House of Dragon’s Emma D’Arcy Embraces Trans-Masc Identity in Short Pink Hair & Masculine Clothes
Trans-masc presenting actor Emma D'Arcy's enjoyment of the collaborative Bowie-inspired shoot for the Spring 2023 issue of Highsnobiety Magazine was evident in the dreamy soft focus spread. They mused in the mag, "Is anyone's style not inspired by David Bowie?"
Emma D'Arcy credited their regular stylist, Rose Forde, in a March 20, 2023, social media update for the "masc blessings" exuding from a sporty blue top accessorized by chunky silver pieces, and hairdresser Jody Taylor for their Bowie'esque "crown" that had been dyed hot pink.
For the non-binary star, clothing is essential to who they are; it's an armor, an opportunity "to feel different in different outfits." They love "the idea" that their garments have had "a life" before them, having frequented thrift stores and charity shops since their youth.
Starring in 'House of Dragon' Made Emma D'Arcy to Dress More Masculine
Chatting to E! red carpet correspondent Loni Love before their best TV actress in a drama win at the 2023 Golden Globes, D'Arcy reflected on the irony of being nominated in a female category just as they have stopped the unsustainable practice of presenting as female in the workplace.
Excited about the return of season two, D'Arcy hopes to "find a bit more space for play."
For the "House of Dragon" star, the Golden Globes nod indicated that the "space for trans people and gender non-conforming people" is growing.
In their Highsnobiety feature, Emma D'Arcy said that if anything had changed their style, it was skirts for their "House of Dragon" character, Rhaenyra Targaryen. The star related how the feminine work wardrobe made them "want to dress more masculine" in their personal life:
"But doesn't a recalibration process happen every time someone is pushed into a new context? I've learned you have to discover what you aren't to know what you want to wear."
Their co-star Olivia Cooke, who portrays their boyfriend-tuned nemesis in the show, seemed to approve of the combination of their pink do and masc styling, commenting on Instagram: "d**n," with a raised hands emoji.
Excited about the return of season two, D'Arcy hopes to "find a bit more space for play" in the hit "Game of Thrones" spin-off. The first season was characterized by various time jumps to set up the larger storyline explored in the coming seasons.
