Farra Fawcett had a meteoric rise to fame in the 20s, following her role in the hit TV show, "Charlie's Angels." After a storied career in show business, the actress revealed in 2006 that she was suffering from cancer. Understandably, the diagnosis turned her life upside-down, and she began spreading awareness for the disease.

In the end, Fawcett lost the battle, passing away in 2009 at the age of 62. Nonetheless, she had put up a good fight and did much to inform people about the disease. She made a documentary, "Farrah's Story," to spread awareness and tell her tale. That said, her first priority always remained her son.

Fawcett's assistant between 2005 and 2007, Mike Pingel, recently spoke to Fox News about her last few years and how she fought to stay alive. Pingle stated that Fawcett never lost her will to live, always looking for positives and hoping things would improve. He also noted that she wanted to stay alive for her son, Redmond O'Neal:

"Farrah fought as hard as she could. All of it was to be here for Redmond, her child. Redmond was her moon, her stars, her sky, her heart. Her father was also, but Redmond was her life. She fought tooth and nail to continue to live, to be with him."

Besides educating the world about cancer, its causes, effects, and treatments, she also sought experimental cures from around the globe. Notably, the actress focused on work that was being done in Germany in the hopes that it could offer some new avenue or promising advancements.

Fawcett's only son opened up about his mother's death, saying not being able to talk to her in her final moments was a blow that shook him to his core.

Pingle also spoke about her last days, saying even then, she lit up whenever O'Neal was around. The assistant described Fawcett's love for her son as "endless and ongoing," and she even thought of O'Neal in her dying moments. Pingle remarked that the last word to cross her lips was "Redmond."

Her Son Redmond O'Neal Opened Up about His Mother's Death

While Fawcett called out her son's name on her deathbed, O'Neal was far away in handcuffs. Sadly, the young man had been arrested before his mom's death, but while he was absent in her last moments, he was permitted to attend her funeral.

Considering her tremendous fame, Fawcett had accumulated a veritable fortune by the time she passed away.

The court allowed O'Neal to attend the funeral with the condition that three police officers chaperoned him. O'Neal was also allowed to trade his prison garb for something more suitable, finally attending Fawcett's funeral in a suit.

O'Neal was arrested for possession of illicit substances and sentenced to serve out his time in Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, California's rehabilitation program. He was 24 at the time. Remond only heard of his mother's passing from the prison pastor.

Fawcett's only son opened up about his mother's death, saying not being able to talk to her in her final moments was a blow that shook him to his core. Looking back, it all seems to have happened in the blink of an eye, as if she was well at one stage and gone the next. O'Neal shared:

"My dad was telling me she died. I didn't even get to say bye to her. For the last four months she was living, I didn't even get to talk to her. She was bedridden, incapable of getting on the phone. The good thing is she didn't know I was in jail. My dad kept that from her."

After his mother died, O'Neal's dad looked out for him. Ryan O'Neal confessed that Fawcett's death hit him hard, but having his son around was like having a bit of Fawcett with him. He mentioned, "There's a lot of his mother in him, so it's almost as if she's around."

What Did Farrah Fawcett's Son Do With His Million-Dollar Inheritance?

Considering her tremendous fame, Fawcett had accumulated a veritable fortune by the time she passed away. The actress decided to leave it all to her son, hoping he would build a stable future for himself with the money.

Despite this, O'Neal was arrested once again in 2018 after he robbed a local convenience store with a knife near Santa Monica. After taking an unknown amount of money from the store clerk, O'Neal fled the scene, although he was quickly apprehended a few blocks away. Police found a knife on O'Neal matching the one used at the crime scene.

Sources confirmed that while Fawcett left her son around $4.5 million in a trust fund, O'Neal could only use the money for matters relating to his healthcare. O'Neal did have access to the interest the money generated, but the rest was kept under lock and key by Richard Francis, Fawcett's business manager. An attorney commented:

"If this $4.5 million is conservatively invested to generate even a modest 5% return, this would mean almost $19,000 per month would be available for Redmond, without ever spending any of the $4.5 million itself."

O'Neal's bail for the arrest was set at a steep $50,000. Despite his struggle with illicit substances, O'Neal and his father remain close. The two have been seen on several occasions, and his filmstar father posted a photo of them at an event to honor Fawcett's life, captioning it, "Celebrating Farrah ❤️."

O'Neal's 2018 arrest wasn't the first after his initial imprisonment. Having had a problem with substance abuse since he was a teenager, the 38-year-old has seen the inside of a courthouse on multiple occasions. His half-sister, Tatum O'Neal, spoke out, saying she loved him dearly, but worried about him endlessly.
