80-year-old Candace was a care home resident for over a decade, spending her life in loneliness, with nobody to visit or call. One day, a letter from a man claiming to be her dead son leaves her stunned, and their encounter changes everything she thought she knew.

It was a bright, frosty morning, and a shrill cry of laughter echoed in the mist. The snow-clad lawn shimmered like a carpet of crushed diamonds in the morning sunshine outside Candace's cozy room.

She was looking out the window, trying to push the haunting feeling of loneliness aside, and telling herself she was in a good place, surrounded by love and care.

But as she watched the visitors greeting the other senior residents, she felt like an outsider—like an orphaned little child pressing her nose on the glass pane, painfully watching everyone else hugging and greeting their relatives.

It had been 15 years since Candace, 80, moved to the care home nestled in the tranquility of red maple trees and breezy mountain air. And all these years, she had never had even one visitor, not one phone call from someone who might have known her, and not a single letter.

But that day, everything was about to change. Everything Candace thought she knew about her life was about to change...

"Miss Candace," Nurse Sandra burst into Candace's pastel-tinted room. "We received a letter today morning. It's...It's for you."

"A letter? For me? That's strange. But from whom? I haven't had letters all my life here."

Candace was so surprised she couldn't process what she'd just heard.

"From a certain Dustin. Do you know who Dustin is?"

"No. I...I don't. Maybe it's some kind of mistake."

Candace frantically searched for her reading glasses. "Do you know what's written in it?"

"I'm afraid no, Miss Candace. This is your letter. It has your name on it, and you're supposed to read it."

"Alright. Give it to me," said Candace, shakily grabbing the letter as she fumbled for her glasses.

Then everything stopped, as though frozen in time, the moment she tore open the envelope and pulled out the letter with the words: "Dear Mom," handwritten in a neat cursive at the top.

A rush of dizziness overwhelmed Candace. The world seemed to spin, and she felt she would pass out when she finished reading the whole thing.

"Dear...please...stay with me...I'm feeling a bit..."

Candace sank onto her couch, trying to make sense of what she had just read.

"How...How can this be? My baby died when he was born. Then who is this claiming to be my son after all these years?" she whispered, passing out on Nurse Sandra's shoulder.

Several minutes later, Candace slowly opened her hazy eyes, feeling bewildered and agitated. As her vision cleared, she took in her surroundings—the pastel yellow ceiling above her, the warm bed, and the letter by her bedside.

She read it again and again, trying to make sense of the words:

"...I looked for you everywhere after that, Mom. When I found out my parents weren't my biological parents, I looked through all the archives and documents. I searched for you everywhere, and then, I found you. I want to meet you, Mom..."

"How can this be?" thought Candace. "My baby died just minutes after he was born. Then who is this, Dustin? God, is this some kind of a cruel joke?"

After losing her newborn baby, Candace plunged headlong into her career and never thought about having a family again. She devoted all her time to work to keep herself occupied. And eventually, her marriage fell apart due to depression and fallout with her ex-husband and in-laws.

Candace couldn't accept the fact she would never be able to conceive again and started living in a solitary world of her own making. She made a considerable fortune during her spirited years and retired at 65.

But as she was getting older and older, she fell sick too often and needed assisted care. The only relatives she had moved out of the state, and some had passed.

Loneliness started driving her crazy. Candace then moved to a care home to live among senior residents like her, some who their children abandoned and some who had come to live there seeking peace until their last breath.

As time fleeted by, Candace embraced her new life in a home away from home. During the 15 years since moving into the care home, Candace never had anybody visiting her or writing to her. So getting such a strange letter from someone claiming to be her dead son didn't quite add up.

"Sandra, can you please read the letter to me again?" Candace asked the nurse, her voice trembling. "Those words...they're unbelievable. Is this some kind of sick joke?"

"Miss Candace, I think you're taking it too far. Things like this happen almost everywhere. It could be a scam. Such people can go to any lengths to deceive older people like you. So just ignore this."

But Candace's heart told otherwise as she read the letter again for the twenty-third time.

"No, dear. My heart tells me something is wrong. That something is there that I need to know. Please, write a letter to this Dustin. Invite him to come and meet me next week. I want to find out what he really wants from me."

"Miss Candace, you sure about this? Maybe you should wait until you're feeling better."

"No!" Candace nodded firmly. "I'm too old to wait for anything. And I don't want to take my doubts to my grave. Please, Sandra, write to him and ask him to come and see me."

"Alright, I'll write to him. But we have to be a bit cautious. You may never know who this Dustin is or what his intentions are."

A weak smile flickered across Candace's face.

"I know, dear. But this is my only chance. I've spent too many years wondering what my life could've been like if I hadn't lost my baby and then my ex-husband. I've been so lonely. Now is my chance to find out. Somebody's out there claiming to be my dead son...to be my baby whose cold, lifeless body I held after he was born. And if this is some kind of a stupid joke, I swear to God I will...."

Candace broke down. Her fragile hands clutched the rosary hard on the frosty December night as Sandra sat beside her, tucking the reply mail in an envelope addressed to Dustin.

"You think he'll come today?" Candace asked Sandra, nervously fidgeting with her hands as she waited for Dustin in her room on the day of the meeting.

"What if he doesn't make it? What if all this was a joke?"

"Everything will be fine, Miss Candace. The letter must have reached him already. Let's wait. And please stay calm."

Nurse Sandra placed her hand on Candace's shoulder as they sat by the window, looking outside, when the door burst open suddenly.

Candace adjusted her glasses and rose at seeing a man's silhouette approaching her. He was tall. He had peppered stubble and a cleft chin and bore a striking resemblance to Candace's late ex-husband, Frank.

"Dustin?" Candace gasped, freezing in her tracks.

"MOM?!"

Candace couldn't speak a word more. The world spun under her feet. She grabbed Nurse Sandra's arm and collapsed on the chair.

"Mom, it's fine," said Dustin as he knelt before Candace, looking her in the eye. "I know what you're thinking. But you're indeed my mother, and I'm your son."

Taking a deep breath, Dustin then revealed that his daughter was recently admitted to the hospital, and for diagnosis, he had to take a DNA test to identify genetic diseases.

"...And then I discovered that my parents weren't my biological parents. I checked all the documents and archives. But I found nothing. And when I confronted my parents, they told me the whole truth."

What Dustin then revealed was a brutal blow Candace could've never imagined.

"My parents...the couple that raised me all those years...they had lost one child after another. And when there was a risk that this would happen again, my father, the man I thought was my real father, had secretly switched his dead child with me. I checked the hospital records and found out that only four deliveries were reported that day. Two were girls, and two were boys. I was one of the boys, Mom...I'm your son."

"And the doctors told me that my baby had died during birth?" Candace whispered, tears drizzling from her shocked eyes.

"Mom, I understand what you might've gone through. Please, I know it's not okay. What they did was so cruel. I'll never forgive them. That's why I wrote to you. I found your details in the archives. I promise, Mom. I want to be with you. I won't leave you...ever again."

Everything felt like a big, bad dream. A nightmare, perhaps. Or even worse. For 54 years, Candace had been living a life of a recluse, deprived of love and family, believing her baby was dead.

But knowing her son was alive, all this while ached her heart and soul. She was wildly mad at the people who stole Dustin and raised him as their son while she was grieving the loss of a baby that wasn't her baby at all.

"How could they? How could they ruin my life like this?" she burst into tears.

"I forgot how to smile the day I buried my dead baby...my blood and flesh, thinking he was my son. I spent days and nights near his grave, mourning...fighting with God to give my baby back or send me to him. I couldn't move on. How could I? When my baby was sleeping still under the earth in his little coffin, how could I find another reason to live or smile?"

"Mom, there's nothing I can say. Coz whatever you went through, I pray it never happens to another mother," said Dustin, cupping Candace's trembling hands. "Let's move on, Mom. Are you ready for this? I know it's going to break a lot of hearts back there in my house. But we got to do this."

Candace nodded in tears. Dustin kissed her forehead and promised to return, storming out of the home to meet his parents.

"I met with my mother Candace today," Dustin sat across from his parents, his expressions cold and stern. "I saw her...finally."

"What did she say?" his mother asked, her eyes wide as her husband clutched her hand under the table, trying to reassure her that Dustin would not leave them.

"She was shocked, of course. Who wouldn't? After knowing that such a hideous thing has happened to them? I want to reconnect with her. She's my biological mother, after all."

Dustin's parents shifted uncomfortably in their seats. They looked each other in the eyes, their vision blurry with tears.

"We...We want to apologize to her," Dustin's dad spoke.

"No. I don't know if she's ready to see you yet. Honestly, I don't feel it's the right time coz we're just getting to know each other. And I think Mom would need time...I mean...a lot of time to get over this and meet you guys."

Dustin's mother looked down at her hands, tears spilling on the table.

"We just want to make things right, dear," she said. "No matter what the future holds, we still love you."

From that day, Dustin started visiting Candace regularly. He even introduced his children to her, and she was so happy to plunge into the joy of having a family again.

With time, Candace's anger melted away, especially on the day she met Dustin's parents. They apologized to her, and to their surprise, she forgave them as she understood their pain of losing one child after another all too well.

Candace moved in with Dustin and lived the best days of her life with his family and her grandchildren. And one night, Candace passed away in her sleep, bequeathing all her fortune to her son.

Dustin thought long and hard about what to do with all that money. Then one day, an idea struck him. He called all his children and hatched a plan to help lonely older people in care homes never feel left out again.

Several months later, Dustin and his children launched an organization that provided leisure activities for lonely older people in the city. It was a special program to help senior residents at care homes connect with others who understand and relate to their struggles.

Dustin named the organization after his late mother. Today, several years later, the organization he founded continues to thrive, bringing joy and peace to many broken hearts.

Elderly residents in assisted living facilities all over the city gather to participate in fun activities and meet others who are just like them. Seeing the joy on their faces assured Dustin that his late mother's legacy would live on, bringing happiness and friendship to those elders who needed it the most.
