Kelli Trainor Worked in the Family Business – Facts about Meghan Trainor's Mother
Kelli Trainor is pop singer Meghan Trainor's mother; she's also mom to her two brothers Ryan and Justin Trainor. Kelli shares her three kids with Gary Trainor, with whom she has been married for about three decades.
The couple had been living in Nantucket, Massachusetts, before relocating to California in 2016 to live close to their brood. Gary first came to the island in 1967 to be a lifeguard for the summer.
Following that stint, he returned to Nantucket more than once and eventually worked several other jobs there before finally settling down.
Gary, an organist, worked as a DJ and later joined the Nantucket Police Department and the Department of Public Works in Massachusetts.
After spending seven years on the road playing music with his then-wife, the family patriarch moved full-time to the island at age 29.
Kelli Trainor Has Been Married for Decades
Kelli Trainor and Gary have been married for about three decades. The couple wed around 1992 and welcomed all their offspring about one year apart. Their middle child, Meghan, was born on December 22, 1993.
Gary had been married before and was previously an organist at Nantucket Methodist Church. After moving to the island full-time, he obtained a bachelor's degree in music education from the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas.
He applied to a public school for a teaching position where he taught a variety of musical instrumentals from grades 4 to 12. However, Gary's teaching journey was cut short when he was involved in a motorcycle accident, leading him to switch careers.
He studied watch and jewelry repair at the North Bennet Street School in Boston and later opened Jewel of the Isle in Keypost Corner off Old South Road after becoming a certified appraiser. Gary and his now-wife Kelli sold the business in June 2016.
Kelli was born on December 3, although the year is unknown. In 2014, her famous daughter paid tribute to her on Twitter and wrote: "ITS MY MOMS BIRTHDAY TODAY!! Happy Birthday KELLI TRAINOR I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!" Kelli now refers to herself as "Mother of Ryan, Justin, and Meghan Trainor" on her Instagram bio.
The mother of three prefers living away from the spotlight. While her husband has appeared with their Grammy-award-winning daughter at public events – including the July 4th Concert and iHeartRadio Music Awards – she has yet to be photographed on the red carpet. But Kelli does have an Instagram page where she shares photos of her family.
Kelli Trainor Created Jewelry
Alongside her husband, Kelli designed and made the family store's sterling silver, including 14-carat yellow and white gold and platinum jewelry, while he focused on the diamond work and stone setting.
The family business was founded by Gary in 1985, and it sold jewelry pieces made by the family. The husband-and-wife duo worked together to create unique custom pieces.
When Kelli and Gary's only daughter Meghan found Hollywood success in 2014, she wanted them to uproot and come over to Los Angeles and move in with her. Kelli explained at the time:
"Meghan would love it if we would just close the store and come with her."
Eventually, Kelli and Gary caved, and in 2016, the pair decided to close the doors of their 30-year-old business venture.
The proud dad shared that he and his wife had spent a year deciding to move from Nantucket to West Hollywood to be close to their kids.
Kelli Trainor Recorded a Song With Her Daughter
While rising to superstardom, Kelli and Gary's child, Meghan, started feeling insecure about her body. Growing up, she and her brothers had always been chubby, and their mom was not "strict" about them having snacks.
The songwriter admitted during a 2022 interview that the songs she has written about self-love were more like anthems for her – because she felt uncomfortable in her skin.
In her hit song, "All That Bass," she mentioned her mother telling her not to be self-conscious about her weight because the opposite gender love girls who are "beautiful inside."
After the song hit the charts and was played everywhere, Meghan revealed even her beloved mom had heard enough of it on the airwaves: "My mom just said, 'Wow, that's pretty annoying.' But she still loves it." The "No" hitmaker also recorded a duet with her parent for a Mother's Day card song.
Besides singing, Meghan, who is married to actor Daryl Sabara, enjoys working out with her family. In a March 2018 interview, she revealed her then-fiance Sabara was her fitness trainer who taught her weight lifting.
She then decided to teach her mom, and they started doing weight training together. Meghan and the "Spy Kids" star got hitched in 2018 and welcomed their only child, son Riley, in 2021.
