Cybill Shared What She Knew about Men in a 2008 Interview
In a candid June 2008 interview, Shepherd opened up about the challenges of juggling her career and love life. She shared the hard-earned wisdom she gained from her dating experiences.

Her father, a great athlete, encouraged her to play rough with the boys, which made her feel like she did not have to conform to traditional feminine roles. As a result, she was faster than most boys in the neighborhood, except for one, who eventually became her boyfriend.
However, Shepherd fell in love with a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, which led her to start lying to sneak out to see him. Eventually, her father caught her.

During the interview, she revealed that she had dated several men. She also experienced decreased libido after menopause, which may be a common concern for many women, but Shepherd found the experience quite liberating.
The actress said she had once felt pressured to engage in intimate activities soon after meeting someone, fearing that her interest would fade over time. She admitted that she had given in to this pressure before and considered doing so again.

Shepherd claimed that flirting was something that came naturally to her. However, she also recognized that this behavior could be risky at some point. She emphasized:
"I was born and bred to be a great flirt. I'm Southern - it's in my blood. We don't take it too seriously down South - it's a form of social relating that doesn't have anything to do with sex. Which makes it dangerous when you travel."

According to Shepherd, dating leading men is not a good idea, although sometimes it can be challenging to resist the attraction. In her experience, she had affairs with actor Jeff Bridges and director Peter Bogdanovich early in her career.
Shepherd also talked about her romance with Elvis Presley. Despite being aware of his drug addiction and the darker aspects of his personality, she held him in high regard and wished she could have been a better friend.

Cybill Had an Affair with Peter Bogdanovich Who Left His Wife for Her
Bogdanovich, who directed Shepherd's first movie, "The Last Picture Show," had a controversial relationship with the actress. According to a People article from May 1974, he left his wife, Patty Platt, and their two children for Shepherd. At the time, they were unmarried and living in a luxurious Bel Air mansion.
Bogdanovich recalled that his initial meeting with Shepherd was not very promising. She sat on the floor, seemingly uninterested. When he asked her what she was up to, she told him she was in college and enjoyed reading.
When he inquired about her favorite author, Shepherd replied that it was Dostoevsky. However, she struggled to answer when Bogdanovich asked which of his books she liked best.

Despite Shepherd displaying such behavior, Bogdanovich sensed a "casually destructive" quality about her. Soon, she eventually earned a role in his film. He said they became "chummy" by the time the movie was three-fourths finished.
Shepherd admitted that, at the time, they were unsure about their true feelings towards each other. She had never been in a serious relationship before and returned to her hometown of Memphis for some time to think.
It took her three weeks to process her feelings about him. Ultimately, she decided to move to California in 1971, and from that moment on, she became a permanent fixture in his life.

Although they were happy together, they did not intend to marry. Shepherd expressed their firm stance on the matter, while Bogdanovich dismissed the idea and remarked:
"[That is ] a chilling thought. Does she look like Mrs. Bogdanovich?"

She Was Married Twice, and Both Marriages Ended In Divorce
Shepherd's love life had been complicated, with two failed marriages that ended in divorce. She first met David Ford, the man who would become her first husband, while she was still in a relationship with Bogdanovich.
In a 2023 ET interview, Shepherd admitted she had an on-screen chemistry with actor Bruce Willis during their time on the ABC comedy "Moonlighting."
In her memoir "Cybill Disobedience," she revealed that she and Ford first met at a Memphis nightclub and were immediately drawn to each other. Ford introduced her to the world of blues music as their relationship developed, igniting Shepherd's passion for performing.

However, their rumored affair seemed to reach Bogdanovich. A heated confrontation ensued when Ford and Bogdanovich ran into each other at a dentist's office. It resulted in Shepherd and Bogdanovich's split.
Shepherd and Ford tied the knot in 1978 while they were still pregnant with their daughter Clementine, whom they welcomed the following year, but in 1982, Shepherd and Ford divorced, citing "irreconcilable differences."
In an interview with The Guardian, Shepherd claimed her husband cheated. Ford reportedly received $15,000 in the divorce settlement, while Shepherd was granted custody of their daughter.

They welcomed twins Ariel and Zachariah into their family. However, after two years of marriage, Shepherd and her second spouse called it quits. The duo never addressed the real reason behind their split.
