On the morning of Mother's Day, Suri, Katie Holmes' daughter, was seen getting flowers from a local flower shop in Soho.

The 17-year-old had two bouquets, one purple and the other a beautiful pink arrangement of flowers wrapped neatly in parchment paper.

As Suri gets older, she looks more like her mother. However, some fans thought that Suri looked sad, while others were shocked at how much she had grown. The actress fought a brutal battle for her daughter's custody and to have this close relationship they share now.

Holmes and Tom Cruise welcomed their first child together in 2006. The former couple had a whirlwind romance and got engaged after two months of dating.

They had their newborn daughter at the altar, with an intimate ceremony in Italy in November 2006. But after five years of marriage, Cruise and Holmes went their separate ways.

In the midst of navigating a divorce with her then-six-year-old daughter, Holmes had her focus on her child. She expressed, "My goal is just to let her know how much I love her," once that was clear, the actress was ready for anything motherhood could throw at her.

Suri has very famous parents, and at the beginning of her childhood, she was photographed many times by paparazzi. But as soon as Holmes cut ties with Cruise, she was determined to keep her child protected and out of the limelight.

Despite being very famous actors, their divorce was private. Holmes' attorney reiterated that the matter was personal and between her and her family. But did not forget to emphasize that her main concern throughout this process was her daughter.

Cruise's representatives, on the other, had expressed that the actor was heartbroken by the divorce and asked for privacy as he focused on his children.

The actress has never been shy to express that Suri was her number one priority. "My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now," she reiterated.

How Katie Holmes Chose to Divorce Tom Cruise to Protect Their Daughter

Holmes and Cruise have enough money to get the best lawyers, but the actress had a strategic plan to help her get sole custody of Suri.

Firstly, Holmes filed for divorce in New York because the city is known for not being fond of giving fighting parents joint custody.

Holmes was reportedly persistent about getting sole custody because she did not want her child to be part of her father's Scientology church. Despite Cruise's investment in the church, the actress did not trust it.

In fact, Cruise was asked if the church was the reason behind their divorce, and he responded, "That was one of the assertions, yes."

Suri was reportedly attending a Scientology school in California at the time, and being awarded sole custody would allow Holmes to remove her.

Additionally, the "First Daughter" star had seen how Cruise's second wife, Nicole Kidman, has been cut off from her children's lives. The two share two children together, Isabella and Conner.

An insider close to Holmes even added that Isabella and Conner were disconnected from their mother, and Holmes was not going to allow that anything separate her from Suri.

Therefore, this turned the custody battle into a messy one. While there was speculation of the Holmes gaining financial benefits from filing in New York, it was revealed that the couple had signed a prenup that excluded her from Cruise's fortunes.

This shows that she was primarily concerned about being able to raise her daughter because having a secondary role in Suri's life would be a way to cut her off slowly.

Despite the signed prenup, Holmes won sole custody of Suri, who was eventually taken out of her Scientology school in California.

In addition to her daughter, the actress was awarded $400,000 a year for child support, which amounted to $33,000 a month until Suri was 18.

Cruise was also requested to pay toward Suri's education, medical and dental expenses, and college tuition. Their divorce settlement also stated that Suri would not be going to a boarding. She would be solely under her mother's care, and her father would get "meaningful" visitation rights.

According to reports, Holmes was pedantic about separating her child from Cruise's religion because it was against the church's policy for members not to have relationships with non-members.

Thus Scientology has also been reported to be the reason behind Kidman's estranged relationship with her two kids. "Bella and Connor are devoted to their father and Scientology, and Katie saw first hand, and this is one of the reasons she filed for sole custody," remarked a source.

One source felt no remorse for the actor regarding his custody loss of Suri and said, "This is his loss, his issue, his problem. He much is brainwashed." Holmes nor her daughter are part of the Scientology church, which reportedly has strained Cruise's relationship with his daughter.
