As they transitioned from the green room to the studio, Donahue asked if he could inquire about her mother during the interview, which touched Thomas deeply. It was unusual, as people typically wanted to know about her famous father, Danny Thomas.

Despite the distance, with Thomas based in Los Angeles and Donahue in Winnetka, Illinois, they embarked on a long-distance courtship. The pair, with Donahue a divorcé with five children, tied the knot in 1980.

However, Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue almost didn't make it to the altar. Prior to their wedding, the pair experienced a three-month split triggered by incessant arguments, the struggles of maintaining a long-distance relationship, and the challenges of juggling their respective careers.
