  • The actress, known for "Tammy" and "Thelma & Louise," was among the most popular fashion icons of the '70s and '80s.
  • Despite the criticism she received from Piers Morgan, Susan Sarandon believes that age is just a number.
  • She doesn't care what others say, but many fans support her choices and consider her a timeless beauty.

Aside from building a stellar reputation in the acting industry since the beginning of her career, Susan Sarandon also became known as an activist, championing many movements. Women's rights and pro-choice organizations are at the top of her interests, but she's not afraid to criticize even politics.

She has always been daring, particularly when regarding her fashion choices. Most people remember her as Janet Weiss from 1975's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," where she wore a whole burlesque outfit and makeup for the final scene.

Just a few years later, the actress stopped wearing bras at Cannes, promoting a "free-the-nipple" campaign. Many fans loved her in her typical American attire, jeans and cowboy boots, for "Thelma & Louise," but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her style.

She began working with designer Todd Oldham in the '90s and was photographed wearing a tiger-striped leather jacket at one of his shows in New York City. Her fashion decisions have remained unchanged, except to keep up with the current trends.

She is not afraid to wear things that show off her enviable body. Hollywood has always been afraid of aging in general, and actresses, in particular, feel the pressure to look as young as possible. But few manage to do it quite like Sarandon.

In 2019, the actress was chosen as the face of Roger Vivier, and she looked better than ever. "When your sense of time has an ending and isn't finite, like how it feels when you're young – when you have an understanding that time is precious – you have a tendency not to waste energy on the small stuff and only to surround yourself with people who are vital, curious, brave and adventurous," Sarandon told Harper's Bazaar.

The actress explained that she doesn't have time for people who don't "contribute to a healthy, fun, adventurous life." She urged readers not to waste time and not fall into the preconceived notions of aging. There's no age limit to what you can do, such as getting your first tattoo at 61.

Sarandon has continued inking her skin since then. In 2017, she spoke about possibly dating women and how she has an inclination for tailored suits instead of feminine dresses. At her age, she doesn't want anything uncomfortable or restricting. She said:

"I wear suits a lot because they're so comfortable. It's not often that I'll wear a dress. Now I'm also wearing a lot of jumpsuits that make me look like a mechanic. I scour the internet looking for them; they just pull you together like a suit, but they're easier and more relaxed, although not so easy when you have to pee. But otherwise, they're great."

Despite her truly unique style, Sarandon revealed that she's not that "knowledgeable" about clothes. But she loved working on the Vivier autumn/winter 2019 campaign. The actress explained she was attracted to the brand's sense of humor. She added:

"I'm not up on everything in fashion, but I know what appeals to me and what I find interesting that I want to hold onto. I'm not someone who constantly follows trends. Roger Vivier is classic with a twist that you can hold onto forever."

The actress lamented how red carpets have changed in the last 50 years since entering the industry. At the time, she would go to second-hand shops to find something to wear because designers wouldn't lend things even to Oscar nominees.

However, she stated there's more pressure now for these ceremonies. It's become "so corporate in feeling – it's on steroids." Sarandon recalled how she was told about her Best Actress Oscar nomination for "Atlantic City," which was just a voicemail. She explained:

"That would never happen now. The same thing has happened to fashion and the red carpet; it's very serious, and it's quite a commitment. […] Now, it's very different. The models don't seem to be having as much fun. They look very bored. Back in the day, models were lively and having so much fun."

When asked if she still had fun dressing up, Sarandon laughed, "Maybe because I dress up so much for a living, I'm not as eager to dress up as a pastime, so I'm grateful when I'm doing a shoot, and I discover something I love. I don't have the patience for it or the body."

In 2014, Sarandon talked to People about the secret to her being considered a "sex symbol" in her late 60s. "If you want to age gracefully, you don't smoke cigarettes and probably laugh a lot, and get the normal amount of exercise, and eat well and stay out of the sun would be the main things," she responded.

However, she added that having a great team for makeup and hair was the real secret. Her active lifestyle also contributes to her timeless looks. In New York, the actress had to walk everywhere and used her bike often. Aside from 30 minutes on the treadmill, Sarandon told People she started boxing.

Another contributing factor to her agelessness could be her choice of dating partners, as she used to be in a wide age-gap relationship with Jonathan Bricklin. The relationship began in 201 when Sarandon was 63 and Bricklin was 32.

But her new romance began only a few months after she ended things with Tim Robbins, who was 12 years younger than her. Unfortunately, she and Bricklin separated after five years. Page Six said he resented being called a "boy toy" or a "backup dancer."

That's not how Sarandon viewed him. The actress told Hello, "It's the soul of a person that interests me. When you are in love, the question of age, sex, color no longer holds any importance."

Sarandon Was Criticized for Her Revealing Clothes

Unfortunately, not everyone will agree with some of your choices, and being in the public eye means some people feel free to judge. Piers Morgan, the controversial English journalist, is fearless in voicing his opinions on everything from politics, activism, social issues, etc.

In 2016, Morgan took to Twitter with a thread criticizing the actress for her outfit at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She rocked a white suit jacket, which was open to reveal a dark bra. The look is consistent with what Sarandon likes to wear most of the time for these events.

The journalist tweeted, "Would Susan Sarandon wear this to a funeral? No. It was thus horribly inappropriate for an In Memoriam tribute." He clarified his point with a second tweet: "To clarify, I've no problem with Susan Sarandon flashing her breasts. Just tacky to do it when fronting 'In Memoriam' at an awards show."

His followers shared similar thoughts. User Baylaadee replied to the thread, "I totally agree about Susan Sarandon. Inappropriate and unattractive." While user hellothere689 wrote, "I have lost so much respect for Susan Sarandon, between her inappropriate memorial outfit (actually her reaction to criticism) and the..."

User californiapatr2 was a little harsher, "Susan Sarandon is just another [...] nobody like Madonna thinking she can still make a buck off sexuality. It's all so freakin gross. 🤮" Another user tweeted, "Susan Sarandon is looking so.......OLD!"

The Criticism Doesn't Matter

Although many celebrities ignore the criticism posted online, Sarandon decided to respond to Piers Morgan. But she demonstrated her classiness. Instead of replying to the journalist directly and continuing a fight, the actress posted an old photo of herself in underwear.

The caption read, "Today's #TBT is dedicated to @piersmorgan."

Sarandon's fans and other Twitter users called out Piers Morgan for his original comments. User wildwhitehall wrote, "Who the hell are you to tell a woman what she can or cannot wear? #everydaysexism."

ToniBrodelle tweeted, "What's tacky, Mr. Morgan, is berating an emancipated woman for her choice of attire. So last century, dahling :)" User RizzleKicks wrote, "'LOL' at you thinking you can pass ANY judgment on a woman like Susan Sarandon. There are levels to this, Piers. You're a loser."

After Sarandon responded with her beautiful TBT photo, other people also decided to ignore Morgan and added more amazing shots of the actress. Twitter user CHANNINGPOSTERS added a photo with the caption, "Susan Sarandon, gorgeous and an excellent actress."

User ChristineAnnieF wrote, "Susan Sarandon's gorgeous smile to bless your timeline💖💖💖." User thundrbirdhoney retweeted some photos and added, "I can't stop thinking about how these pictures are from only a year ago. She's glowing. Susan Sarandon, you're the most beautiful person I've ever seen!!!"

No matter what happens online or who thinks she should wear something different, Sarandon won't listen. She went to the SAG Awards in 2016, unafraid to put her black bra on full display, and many photographers captured her wide smile on the red carpet.

In 2017, she attended the TCA All-Star Party in a dark pantsuit with a daring décolletage, and anyone who looks that good in their 70s and isn't afraid to fight for what the causes she loves, should be proud of their body.
