Hugh Skinner Is Openly Gay

The British actor is open about his sexuality. However, he revealed that being gay and embracing his identity made him feel somewhat excluded from the mainstream.

During an interview, Skinner acknowledged that he felt a specific obligation to discuss his sexual orientation in interviews, recognizing the significance of representing and speaking about it. He said:

"I find it nerve-wracking. I feel like I have to say something on message about things. I feel like if I talk about being gay, I have to say something, and I don't know what to say other than that just is my life, and I haven't got anything very interesting to say about it."

He then admitted that he prefers not talking about his sexuality and noted that the less people know about actors, the better. Even so, he clarified that his reluctance to discuss his sexual orientation openly should not be misunderstood as a negative perspective.

Skinner acknowledged that there had been a historical tendency to avoid discussing such matters, especially for leading male actors. He also emphasized that heterosexual individuals do not feel the need to talk about their sexuality.

Hugh Skinner Often Plays Gay Characters

While Skinner is open about his sexuality, his role in the romance-drama series "Little Birds" portrays him as a closeted gay. The actor found it shocking when he discovered that in the 1950s, the societal emphasis on marriage and traditional family values made being gay scandalous.

He then revealed that during filming, the cast participated in meaningful conversations due to their connections to their characters, which made them get along well.

In the series "Little Birds," Skinner portrays Hugo Cavendish-Smyth, a financially struggling upper-class British man. Desperate to improve his financial situation, he plans to marry Lucy Savage, a naive American heiress (played by Juno Temple) who has come to Tangier for that purpose.

Meanwhile, Savage's arms dealer father expects Cavendish-Smyth to engage in business deals in North Africa. However, the marriage lacks the desired elements for Savage, as her husband is gay, which coincides with Skinner's sexual orientation.

The actor later revealed, "...this is definitely the first time I've played a gay person in any depth and that definitely fascinated me. And particularly in that period in the 50s when it was an absolutely horrific time."
