Candian actor Dean McDermott recently caused confusion on social media after announcing that he and his wife, Tori Spelling, are getting a divorce following seventeen years of marriage.

He made the announcement on June 17, 2023, on Instagram, with a lengthy statement about the couple's supposed split. However, the "Due South" alum deleted the said post several hours later.

"It's with great sadness and a very, very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways and start a new journey of our own," McDermott penned.

He also noted he and the actress would move forward as doting co-parents "and guide and love our children through this difficult time."

The family patriarch continued: "We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this. Thank you all for your support and kindness."

The post was accompanied by two photos: a throwback of the couple on the red carpet and another from a recent red-carpet event, showing them posing with four of their children.

Spelling got candid about the early stages of her and the "Open Range" star's romance in her 2009 memoir, "sTORI Telling." She penned:

"It was love at first sight. I fell so hard … Then I noticed he had a wedding ring. [..] It was fun to flirt, but I knew nothing would happen … But: Dean and I went to a bar after dinner. And we spent the night at the Cartier Place. The following day when I woke up next to Dean, I had no regrets."

The reality star admitted that was when it dawned on her that her marriage was on the rocks because she had no remorse about cheating on her now-former spouse.

Spelling and McDermott had a whirlwind romance as they eloped in Fiji less than a year after crossing paths. They soon started a family after that.

The lovebirds had their eldest child, son Liam in March 2007. Their eldest daughter, Stella, arrived in June 2008, followed by their third child, Hattie, in October 2011. The duo welcomed their second son, Finn, in December 2013 and their youngest child and son, Beau, in March 2017.

However, money problems persist in their lives. In January 2023, reports revealed Spelling owes over $1.3 million in tax liens, which is the outstanding balance of the number of state and federal tax liens over the years.

She and McDermott were slapped with a federal tax lien of over $75,000 in 2018 for the year 2016, per documents filed with the Los Angeles County Recorder's Office.

Spelling was ordered to pay over $31,000 state tax lien for 2016 that same year. Another federal tax lien was filed against the couple, amounting to $184,390. 67.

The mother of five was slapped with another state lien in 2017 for over $50 000 for the year 2015. In 2016, she and McDermott had to fork out $707,487.30 in federal tax lien for 2014. They received their final state tax lien filing in 2016 for the year 2014 for $259,108.23.

Spelling Discusses "Co-parenting" in Their Blended Family of 5 Kids

In a September 2022 interview, Spelling spoke candidly about being a mother of five children and parenting her brood with McDermott.

After finding ways to manage her stress levels while juggling being a working parent, she revealed how she and the reality television personality balance each other out.

"Co-parenting, Dean and I definitely have different parenting strategies. I'm kind of the feelings Mom, and he's more procedural," said Spelling.

While McDermott is said to be "great at timing and planning," she lacks in that department. The Los Angeles native added, "You need both of those to make it work. […] You need both worlds."

Spelling grew up not knowing how to express her feelings, so she vowed to do things differently with her children. Doing that has allowed her to get out of her shell. She divulged:

"My kids, they'll probably say, 'Oh, Moms asks too much about our feelings.' That's okay. I am constantly checking in and saying, 'Okay, what's up? What are your worries? Let's talk about it.'"

While checking in on her sons and daughters, Spelling uses that time to bring them together by doing activities they love and enjoy, such as cooking, baking, and DIYing.

The doting mother said she gets more answers from her children when she asks them questions in a relaxed environment.
