How Did Leandro's Mother and Father React to His Death?
Leandro's parents, Drena and Carlos, are in immeasurable shock and sadness as they bid goodbye to their son, whom they welcomed into their lives in 2003.
Drena announced on Instagram on July 3, 2023, that they had lost their "beloved son Leo." She thanked everyone for their outpouring of love and support and asked that the family be given privacy as they "process this inconsolable grief."
[L]aw authorities revealed that they are investigating Leandro's death as an overdose because both drugs and drug paraphernalia were found near the teenager's body.
Leandro's dad, Carlos, also shared on Instagram a similar message alongside pictures of his son through different stages of life. In some of the pictures, Leandro posed with his mom and, in others, with his dad. Carlos wrote partly on the post, "You can't spell Love without Leo."
Drena also made another post on Instagram to celebrate her son. She called Leandro her "beautiful sweet angel," whom she loved beyond words. Drena said her son was her joy and heart and wished she was with him even in death.
The actress said she doesn't know how she will live without her son but that she would try to go on with life and spread the love Leandro made her feel as his mother. She also wrote:
"You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you 😞 ... Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy 🙏🏽💔💔💔💔💔🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️."
On July 4, 2023, after Drena, Robert, and Carlos had visited Leandro at the funeral home, the actress shared another heartbreaking post on Instagram.
She revealed that she had just held Leandro's body "for the last time" and noted that her son "didn't deserve to die like this." The "Showtime" star said losing her son wasn't right or fair.
She added that her heart was in terrible pain in a way that she didn't know was possible because it still breathed and barely functioned. "Leo my darling I love you today like the first day I held you in my arms…You were kindness acceptance and love and I can't believe any of this is real," she added.
Drena also said she would hold every memory and every second she spent with her son in her heart until she could be with him again, adding:
"My heart is broken forever. Me daddy and your family love you, I love I love you with every beat of my crying heart 💔💔💔😭🕊️🕊️🕊️ @carlosmare.”
Drena and Carlos’ son died at the young age of 19. His father was an artist, while his mother, who featured in "A Star Is Born," was adopted by Robert in 1976 after he married her mother, Diahnne Abbott.
What Caused Leandro's Death?
Leandro's lifeless body was found sitting in a chair in a one-bedroom apartment in the Cipriani Club Residences on Wall Street.
A concierge at 55 Wall Street confirmed that Leandro lived in the $950,000 apartment in the building. According to law authorities, there were no obvious signs pointing to his death.
However, law authorities revealed that they are investigating Leandro's death as an overdose because both drugs and drug paraphernalia were found near the teenager's body. Leandro was also house-sitting.
Leandro's body was discovered by a friend who went to check on him because the friend hadn't heard from him in a few days.
The 19-year-old was an aspiring actor and already on a similar path to the one his mother and grandfather had taken.Leandro also appeared in "A Star Is Born" alongside his mother. In 2018, he was in "Cabaret Maxime."
After news broke that Leandro was dead, several flowers were delivered to Drena's apartment. A concierge also spoke about Leandro's personality.
What Did the Concierge Say about Leo?
The concierge who confirmed where Leandro lived said the teenager was a friendly young man who always said hello when he arrived and left.
Leandro lived alone in that building on its upscale sixth-floor apartment, which he rented for less than a year.
The apartment is found in the same building as Cipriani, a luxury venue for events. The concierge said that as much as Leandro was friendly, he kept to himself.
The concierge noted that he didn't know who Leandro was until he read the story of his death. He described Leandro's death as a tragedy as the teenager just looked like a baby in his pictures.
Residents in the building right next to the Wall Street subway said they weren't aware of Leandro's death. They spotted an ambulance and fire truck on a chill Sunday afternoon, which alerted them to his death.
The concierge had never seen Robert at the apartment Leandro lived in. Currently, the teenager's family is still in shock and trying to come to terms with the loss of Leandro at such a young age.
