Greta Gerwig had long been a part of the film and TV industry when she achieved critical acclaim as a director. Some of her most notable projects have included LGBTQ storylines and elements and have aroused curiosity about her sexuality among fans.

Greta Gerwig has directed arguably the most anticipated film of 2023, which is slated for release in just weeks. "Barbie," featuring a vast star-studded cast, will debut on screens on July 21, and although there is worldwide excitement for the movie, some aren't too happy about it.

Recently, a Twitter video of right-wing Christian preacher Kent Christmas showed him calling for "holy judgement" on Greta Gerwig's film. Christmas is known for his strong advocacy behind conservative politics and beliefs in the United States.

During the service mentioned above, he declared, "I curse in the name of the Lord this new 'Barbie' movie that has been released full of transsexual, and transgender, and homosexuality." Although a teaser trailer was released earlier in 2023, Gerwig kept a tight lid on the film's plot.

Therefore, the supposed LGBTQ elements Christmas spoke of are yet to be confirmed. It is worth noting, however, that perhaps his condemnation is directed toward the openly queer portion of the cast, including Hari Nef, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, and Scott Evans.

Gerwig hasn't addressed Christmas's statements, but another rising topic related to the actress-turned-director is her sexuality. Although she has never spoken of it publicly, she once shared that her first boyfriend wasn't straight.

Greta Gerwig's First Boyfriend Was Gay, and She Knew It

Gerwig had her first boyfriend as a teenager, and he was gay. Reflecting on the relationship during a 2012 interview, she said, "It’s a very good thing to have a gay boyfriend as your first boyfriend," instead of "dating some meathead who just wants to touch your breasts."

It was a happy and safe young romance for Gerwig, who remembered that she and her former lover "really liked each other" and had much in common. He wasn't interested in being sexually intimate, nor was she, which left plenty of room to bond in other ways.

The two also shared a somewhat rebellious spirit. "We used to go to dances together and, regardless of the theme of the dance, we would create our own theme and go as whatever we had decided the theme was," she recalled.

Greta Gerwig Has Included Queer Storylines in Her Work

Gerwig's chiefly recognized films with leading queer characters are 2017's "Lady Bird" and "Little Women," both of which star Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet. "Lady Bird" follows Christine (Ronan), who falls deeply for her schoolmate, Danny, only to discover he's gay.

In "Little Women," there isn't a solid queer storyline, but Ronan argued that her character, Jo, might be attracted to women. She quoted one of Jo's lines, where she said, "I want to be able to move freely and not have rules on who I'm supposed to love."

Greta Gerwig Had a Baby with Her Longtime Partner, Noah Baumbach

Greta Gerwig's significant other is critically acclaimed director Noah Baumbach. The couple met in 2010 when they collaborated on the film "Greenberg" and began a romantic relationship shortly after. They kept their relationship under wraps, only publicly appearing together in 2018.

Though it's unclear when the lovebirds became engaged, they revealed that they already referred to each other as husband and wife. They welcomed their first child in 2019 but have not shared details on their baby's gender, date of birth, or name.
