People who worked with O'Connor commented that the singer's popularity and skill allowed other women to follow in her tracks, opening the music industry up to many female artists. Sadly, the iconic musician recently passed away, dying at the relatively young age of 56 in her new London apartment.

Reports indicate that London police found O'Connor unresponsive in her flat on Wednesday, July 26. The singer had moved to the UK only a few weeks prior to her death. Police were tipped off by reports about a seemingly unconscious woman lying in her flat and showed up at O'Connor's door around 11:18 a.m.

O'Connor took to Instagram shortly after her son's death, confirming that he had passed away and mourning her loss.

The musician was pronounced dead when law enforcement officials arrived, and the officers have revealed that no foul play is suspected. O'Connor's family shared the news of her death via social media, which elicited countless tributes from fellow artists worldwide, as well as a slew of sympathetic messages from her fans.

Those close to the singer shared that she had struggled with fame ever since she became a musical sensation, and her life had taken a few unexpected curves in recent years. O'Connor notably had to overcome the recent death of one of her children, still grieving his passing a few days before her death.

Losing a Son

Just over a week before O'Connor passed away, the singer took to Twitter to mourn the death of her 17-year-old son Shane Lunny. O'Connor shared a picture of herself posing in the arms of her beloved boy, both smiling warmly at the camera. O'Connor revealed young Shane had taken his own life, writing:

"#lostmy17yrOldSonToSuicidein2022. Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

Shane passed away in Dublin in January 2022 after escaping from the hospital where he was being held under suicide watch. The young boy had survived two previous attempts to take his own life, which prompted his stay at the local hospital. His mother announced his death via social media.

O'Connor took to Instagram shortly after her son's death, confirming that he had passed away and mourning the loss. In a heartwrenching final message to her son, the Irish singer wished him well in the afterlife and expressed how much she loved the young man. O'Connor canceled all her shows in 2022 following his death.

Although the singer kept her children out of the spotlight for most of their lives, Roisin joined her mother on stage in 2014.

Following her son's escape from the hospital, O'Connor made a series of Twitter posts begging her son to come home. The anxious mother also blamed the hospital for losing Shane, although many of the Tweets have since been deleted. A week after her son was found, O'Connor was also hospitalized.

The singer had Tweeted about wanting to join her deceased son, although she soon apologized for the Tweets and assured her fans that police had escorted her to the hospital, where she was being kept under close surveillance. Losing her son shook her tremendously, and her final message to her boy reflected her emotional state before her death.

O'Connor's Surviving Children

Besides Shane, O'Connor raised three more children. The singer shared Shane, her second youngest, with the Irish musician Donal Lunny. The pair welcomed the boy shortly after working together on an album, and it seems Shane had inherited much of his mother's talents and taste for music.

O'Connor revealed that Shane had little interest in going to college, hoping instead to make a name for himself as a musician. Although Shane wanted to follow in his mother's footsteps, the rest of O'Connor's kids decided to forge their own paths despite the fact that many of them had inherited musical talents from their mom.

O'Connor's oldest child, Jake Reynolds, was born in 1987. His father was the music producer John Reynolds, although O'Connor's relationship with the father of her first child didn't last. Instead of going into music, Jake decided to become a chef. He also started a family, welcoming two children of his own.

O'Connor welcomed her second child — and her only daughter — in 1995 with the journalist John Waters. Unlike with the father of her first child, O'Connor never married her daughter's father. After the two went their separate ways, the parents were involved in a lengthy custody battle. Waters was eventually granted custody of Roisin Waters in 1999.

Although the singer kept her children out of the spotlight for most of their lives, Roisin joined her mother on stage in 2014, where the pair performed a duet on Icelandic TV. O'Connor noted that even though her daughter had a lovely voice, she was glad Roisin chose to become a pastry chef instead of chasing a musical career.

The singer's youngest son, Yeshua Bonadio, was born in 2006. O'Connor opened up about the boy, saying he shares her musical talents and could possibly end up pursuing a career in music. That said, Yeshua has expressed going to college, following in the academic footsteps of his scientist father, Frank Bonadio.

O'Connor also noted that her two youngest children resembled her the most, describing Yeshua as her "lookalike." Like his younger brother, Shane was almost a carbon copy of his mom. O'Connor commented about her son, "He is the child who is most like me, I believe, to look at and by nature."
