Newmar has been married only once. She wed John Holt Smith, a Texas lawyer, in 1977, but they divorced after six years. Despite not getting married again, the actress confessed that she loves and adores men, especially when they are all over her.

Smith was born deaf and with Down Syndrome, among other complications. Newmar noted that her son was her inspiration and brought her so much joy. The actress also draws happiness from her home, which hosts a gorgeous garden.

Why Does Newmar Enjoy Gardening?

Newmar is an avid gardener. When asked why she loves gardening, the actress said, "A true garden is a world-class resolver of human problems."

The actress said she never felt like she was raising an afflicted child when she raised her son with Down Syndrome. "John is what makes my life great," she gushed.

Gardening helps Newmar unscramble her overworked head. Her 8,600 feet Los Angeles property has four secret gardens. The actress confessed that she loves a small house and a big outdoor garden. Newmar doesn't like an indoor garden.

The actress's garden has over 80 varieties of roses. Newmar said when she goes outside and sees one of her flowers blooming, it transfixes her. She often picks a flower, looks into it, and falls down into it with spiritual glee.

How Did Julie's Life Change After Welcoming a Son?

Newmar gave birth to her son, John Jewl Smith, in 1981. The actress said her son was adorable and that her outlook on life changed when she welcomed Smith. Smith is responsible for the actress's understanding and practice of true love.

"My son, John, has various handicaps. He doesn't talk, he's deaf, and he doesn't walk much, but it came to me recently that he is my guru. He makes me smarter than I am… It's unconditional love."

At 89, the actress said she had lived a remarkable life full of surprises. Now, she loves her computer and the internet because they are an immediate resource of ideas and people all over the world.

Newmar, who said she was at the epitome of her life, will turn 90 on August 16, 1933. The actress still finds joy in life and loves to think and write. Her life right now is deeply rewarding and exciting, and the actress is very interested in knowing the future.
