American Nurse and Daughter Kidnapped in Haiti: Eyewitnesses Reveal Chilling Details of Their Abduction
An American woman and her child were allegedly kidnapped while working in Haiti. Witnesses who saw the abduction said armed men barged in with weapons, took the woman and her daughter, and demanded a ransom.
On July 27, 2023, an American nurse, Alix Dorsainvil, who worked for the Christian humanitarian organization El Roi Haiti, was kidnapped with her daughter in Haiti. The pair's disappearance is believed to have occurred near the country's capital of Port-au-Prince.
The nurse's husband, Sandro Dorsainvil, is the founder and the director of operations of the nonprofit organization where she works. She was living and working in Port-au-Prince at a school run by her husband's organization.
El Roi Haiti reported that the nurse and her daughter were taken from their campus (which includes a medical clinic, a school, and more) near Port-au-Prince in the morning while she was "serving in our community ministry."
The New Hampshire woman first visited Haiti as a college student after an earthquake in 2010. She then fell "in love" with the country's people. The nurse started living in Port-au-Prince in 2020 at the organization's school.
On July 29, 2023, the organization's website quoted Jason Brown, the president and co-founder of El Roi Haiti Outreach International, described her as, "A deeply compassionate and loving person who considers Haiti her home and the Haitian people her friends and family."
Brown also shared that Sandro's wife was a tireless worker in their school and served as a community nurse who relieved much suffering. She was said to have loved Haiti's people and played a key role in her community.
On the same day Brown's quote about the missing woman appeared on the organization's website, the US State Department said it is aware of the kidnapping reports. The State Department also contacted the Haitian authorities with whom they are working to crack the case.
Although the messages of support are highly appreciated, the public was asked not to contact the family for comments. Details on how the mother and her daughter were taken and by whom were revealed days after she went missing without a trace.
How and Who Kidnapped Alix and Her Daughter?
On August 1, 2023, it was revealed that no details about Alix Dorsainvil's and her daughter's whereabouts were available. The day before, 200 Haitians marched in Port-au-Prince, showing how upset they were over the kidnapping of the nurse and her child.
The US State Department noted that abductions are nothing new in the country, observing that criminal elements tended to target American citizens.
Gang violence has worsened in the capital, with witnesses revealing what they saw in the abduction. Lormina Louima, a patient who showed up at the small brick clinic where Alix worked for a regular check-up, was shocked when armed men rushed into the establishment and took hold of the nurse.
Louima was in the waiting line when the intruders pulled out a gun. Caught entirely off-guard, she asked to be released, as she didn't want to be held liable by the men as a witness. Other community members recalled the men demanding $1 million in ransom money for the nurse and her child.
The US State Department urged Americans to avoid traveling to Haiti on the same day the nurse was taken. Protesters waved cardboard signs written in Creole, making their displeasure at having someone so integral to the community unfairly taken by criminals felt. One person wrote:
"She is doing good work in the community. free her (sic)."
The US State Department noted that abductions are nothing new in the country, observing that criminal elements tended to target American citizens. Many Haitians are angered by the violence engulfing their country, as they simply wish to live peacefully.
