‘Dance Moms’ Abby Lee Miller Learns to Walk Again after She Broke 4 Bones amid Chemo – She Hoped for a Miracle
- Abby Lee Miller underwent emergency surgery only to discover a life-threatening disease.
- She learned that she had cancer and has since been wheelchair-bound.
- Miller remains optimistic about her chances of walking again and is excited about a new project in the pipeline.
Reality star Abby Lee Miller's world was crushed after being diagnosed with cancer several years ago. This only came to light after undergoing emergency surgery for what doctors believed was a spinal cord infection.
Miller underwent the medical procedure in April 2018, where she was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A year since the diagnosis, she has undergone ten rounds of chemotherapy and months of rehabilitation with the hope of being able to walk again.
In a May 2019 interview, the "Dance Moms" star was happy to reveal that her cancer went into remission and expressed gratitude for those who had been helping her through the journey:
"The cancer is completely gone. I'm more than grateful. […] I'm very grateful and thankful to strangers that have been so kind."
On the first anniversary since the surgery, Miller posted a photo of her spinal surgery scar on Instagram and candidly talked about her experience, writing:
"I struggled through months of physical therapy to learn to sit up again, to crawl, and maybe with a miracle, someday I'll walk."
The television personality bashed doctors who initially mistreated her, adding she went to see them more than once complaining about the same symptoms, but they could not figure out what was wrong with her.
However, she was lucky enough to find a team of doctors who determined the problem and publicly thanked them for their efforts. She also advised those who failed to "STOP practicing" medicine. Despite the obstacles, she has hope that she can walk again someday.
Miller Has Been in a Wheelchair for Five Years
It seems Miller's health issues continue to persist. In a March 2023 interview, she revealed that she broke her tibia and fibula again. She described the incident as a "tragic freak accident."
The Pennsylvania native shared she injured her right leg after her wheelchair slammed into a wall which was the first time something like that had occurred.
Consequently, the "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition" alum shattered the bottom of her tib fib after breaking the top part of the tib fib previously.
Moreover, after undergoing intense chemotherapy for her cancer, she is most likely to endure broken bones often. They become more fragile due to the chemo.
So far, Miller has already broken four bones, all on her right leg. She said the unbearable situation is a "setback" in terms of the likelihood of being able to walk again.
"I was paralyzed from the neck down – no movement. Because this cancer – this lymphoma – was choking my spinal cord," Miller revealed in a May 2019 interview.
She expressed that if doctors had not discovered her cancer, she would not be alive today, adding the biggest challenge in the present time is now her right knee.
During the interview, Miller divulged she had needed a knee replacement for seven years. When speaking on her cancer battle, the brunette, who has been wheelchair-bound for five years, said she is "tough."
Miller's Future Plans for a New Project
Miller, the founder of the Abby Lee Dance Company who featured on "Dance Moms" for eight years from 2011 to 2019, shared she fought for her life because she felt like she still had more things to do.
She has dreams to bring to life, which has more to do with creating a new show. Miller revealed she was working on the latest iteration of the Lifetime hit show, but things will be different this time.
According to her, her new project does not involve working with the network anymore. She insists that although this will be the dance show reincarnated, it will be entirely new.
Miller divulged there will be little girls being featured on the show along with their mothers. "And the talent is nuts," said the Hollywood star.
She explained that the addition of older dance castmates would make the show stand out from its predecessor and added viewers will get to see her going head-to-head with the older girls.
Although the new series promises new drama, Miller shared Maddie Ziegler will not be appearing on the show. This comes after Ziegler shared in a June 2022 interview that the former series had a" toxic environment."
Miller stressed the dancer does not want to be associated with her, which saddens her. However, she has learned to accept how they both went their separate ways.
Since exiting "Dance Moms," Ziegler found success as an actress in several projects, including the teen drama film, "The Fallout," and the musical movie, "West Side Story."
