ABC's top-rated sitcom, "The Conners," has wisely maneuvered through significant changes and challenges, but the show has done exceedingly well. Season five aired in May 2023, and while season six has been confirmed, producers believe it may be the last.

"The Conners" is a beloved sitcom following the daily lives of the titular working-class family, giving audiences a slice of life onscreen with a touch of comedy. The show is a revival of the '90s hit comedy series "Roseanne," which ended on a sour note after nine seasons.

"Roseanne" began airing in 1988 and appealed to millions throughout the following decade, but what caused widespread abhor among fans was the writers' decision to suddenly change the Conners' lives with a winning lottery ticket.

When the show was picked up in 2017, maintaining the same initial title, the creators ignored this change, but another challenge arose. The eponymous star, Roseanne Barr, had to be killed off the series after receiving backlash for posting several racist tweets (she made unwelcome remarks about the Holocaust earlier in 2023).

"Roseanne" was then renamed "The Conners" as the writers scripted around Roseanne's sudden death. "The Conners" was a hit, but now it seems the cast, the show's creators, and some fraction of the audience are ready to bid it farewell.

'The Conners' Season Six Details: It's Coming, but Expect Delays

Less than two weeks after season five premiered, ABC announced that "The Conners" had been renewed for a sixth season. The creators are tentatively gunning for 13 episodes, although they hope to have more.

Season six was scheduled for release between September and October 2023; however, given the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes, the scripts have yet to be written, and consequently, production has halted.

Still, it has been estimated that the series will return sometime between January and March 2024. Although an official cast list hasn't been announced yet, fans can expect to see the main stars in season six, including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Katey Sagal, and Sara Gilbert.

Bruce Helford and John Goodman on 'The Conners' End

Days before season five hit screens, co-executive producer Bruce Helford predicted the sixth season of "The Conners" may be the last. “At this point in time, we feel that [next season] is possibly going to be the last season of 'The Conners,'" he expressed.

Helford acknowledged the show's success, looking at the numbers, but maintained that its end was "definitely a possibility." Goodman echoed that sentiment in an interview over a month later, adding that the sitcom lasted longer than he expected.

'The Conners' Season Possible Six Storyline: What Fans Hope Is Explored

ABC has not commented on whether season six is indeed the last installment of "The Conners," but should it be true, there are a few directions fans hope the show will take. For one, they hope Becky (Alicia Goranson), a single mom and recovering addict, will finally have another chance at true romance.

Additionally, they hope Jackie (Metcalf) receives some closure before losing her mother, Beverly (Estelle Parsons), to Alzheimer's and for Dan (Goodman) to finally do something that makes him happy after everyone leaves to start their lives away from home: hit the road with his wife.
