Touring can be one of the most demanding parts of a musician's career. Constant travel, changing schedules, and long nights often make it difficult to maintain healthy habits. For Wiz Khalifa, however, staying in shape has become a key part of life on the road.

During a 2023 interview with Men's Health, the rapper opened up about his fitness journey and approach to healthy living, including how he stays motivated to train, maintains structure while touring, and keeps his nutrition on track despite the challenges that come with life on the road.

A Decade of Change

Khalifa's commitment to fitness was not something that developed overnight. Reflecting on the early years of his career, the rapper explained that his health journey began much later than many fans might expect.

Having started touring at just 19 years old, he spent much of his first decade in the music industry focused on building his brand and establishing himself as an artist.

He also noted that the years before that were spent "kind of just wilding out" while doing what he believed was necessary to become a successful businessman. Looking back, Khalifa described those years as a period of learning and growth.

Although he embraced the lifestyle that came with his rapid rise to fame, he also recognized that some of the habits he developed during that era were not ones he wanted to carry forward.

His transformation becomes even more striking when compared with his routine during the height of the "Black and Yellow" era. According to Khalifa, fitness was not part of his daily life at all in 2011. He admitted:

"In 2011, the workout routine was nonexistent. I wasn't even interested in weights, or fitness, or physical activity, or anything."

By 2023, that had completely changed. "Now, I'm in the gym six days a week," he said, adding that training had become part of his everyday routine rather than something he picked up and put down.

How Wiz Khalifa Stays Motivated

Maintaining that level of consistency requires motivation, and Khalifa revealed that inspiration often comes from surprisingly simple places. One of his favorite sources is social media.

"Sometimes I'll just be scrollin', and there will be a video of somebody boxing, or there'll be a video of somebody lifting," he said, explaining that those clips often put him in the mood to train.

Rather than viewing exercise as an obligation, he uses those moments as reminders to stay disciplined and continue building on the progress he has already made. That mindset has helped transform fitness from an occasional interest into a permanent part of his lifestyle.

The Role Martial Arts Plays in His Life

Weight training is only one piece of Khalifa's fitness journey. The rapper also spoke about the impact martial arts has had on his life over the past several years. Beyond the physical benefits, he shared:

"Martial arts training changed my life. It helped me a lot physically. It gave me another purpose — I wouldn't say in life — but just creatively, you know."

For someone who grew up watching martial arts films, the experience of becoming a martial artist himself offered a completely different perspective. The discipline required for training, along with the mental focus it demands, has become an important part of his overall approach to health and wellness.

His typical gym routine reflects that balance. Khalifa explained, "[On a] normal day, I wake up at 6 a.m., eat breakfast, take my son to school, then hit the gym."

"We do different muscle groups every day, so I do weight training for an hour, then mixed martial arts for another hour. Afterwards, I stretch, and then I like to have a protein shake [...]," he continued.

Why Routine Matters on Tour

While many artists struggle to maintain healthy habits while traveling, Khalifa believes consistency is the key to success. "The main thing about staying healthy on tour and on the road is just keeping a good routine," he shared.

He compared touring to an athlete's competitive season. During periods when he is not touring, he can focus on heavier lifting and more intensive training.

Still, travel conditions can vary dramatically from city to city, and unexpected obstacles sometimes force adjustments to the plan.

Once he is back on the road, however, the goal shifts from making major gains to maintaining the progress he has already achieved. That approach allows him to stay active without overloading his body while balancing performances, travel, and other professional commitments.

How His Diet Has Changed Over the Years

Khalifa's approach to nutrition has evolved just as dramatically as his fitness routine. Early in his career, he admitted that he largely ate whatever he wanted, with his meals often including Caribbean food, late-night Chinese takeout, and Papa John's pizza.

"It wasn't that good all the time," he confessed with a laugh. Today, however, his strategy is far more structured. Although touring presents unique challenges, Khalifa said he works to keep his diet consistent regardless of where he is performing.

The Secret to Eating Healthy on the Road

For many performers, finding nutritious food while traveling can be difficult. Khalifa addressed that challenge by bringing professional help with him. He shared:

"I have a chef come with me so I can get balanced meals. It's really difficult to eat balanced meals on the road."

Thanks to the additional help, the rapper receives balanced meals that typically include lean proteins, rice, and vegetables, while still incorporating some of the foods he enjoys most. Still, travel conditions can vary dramatically from city to city, and unexpected obstacles sometimes force adjustments to the plan.

Even so, he explained that his team finds ways to make it work and stay on track. "You gotta make do with what we have," he said, adding that things usually work out the way they are supposed to.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Ultimately, years of commitment to training and nutrition have produced noticeable results. In addition to feeling healthier, Khalifa believes the lifestyle changes have improved his appearance and helped him maintain the energy needed for live performances. He exclaimed:

"I look buff as hell on stage. I always had good energy — now my body looks amazing."

For Wiz Khalifa, staying healthy while touring is not about following a temporary fitness trend. It is about creating routines that can be maintained over the long term, whether he is at home, in the gym, or performing in front of thousands of fans around the world.
