Steve Harwell Is at Home Hospice Care with ‘Only a Week or So’ to Live — His Fiancée Is with Him Every Day

On September 3, 2023, it was revealed that Smash Mouth's Steve Harwell suffered serious health complications and is being cared for at home in hospice. It is confirmed that the band's longtime frontman is in his final stages of life.
The retired musician is suffering from liver failure, which is determined to be in its final stages. Smash Mouth's representative confirmed that the star is now home; however, his prognosis isn't good.

Friends and family gathered to see him over the past three days as he has "only a week or so to live." The representative asked the singer's fans to respect Harwell's privacy as his family continued to maneuver this trying time, but this isn't the first health scare he's experienced over the years,
What Medical Emergencies Has Steve Gone Through, and When Did He Retire?
One of Harwell's health scares happened in August 2016, when he collapsed in Urbana, Illinois, mid-concert and had to be rushed by ambulance to a hospital. The following year, his band postponed several performances while he underwent treatment for his heart ailments.

In 2017, Smash Mouth postponed some performances while Harwell underwent treatment for his heart problems. Harwell ended up retiring from music in 2021 because of his medical issues, and Zach Goode took the role of lead singer in his stead.

Years before, the "Walkin' on the Sun" singer was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which impaired the heart's ability to pump blood properly.
In the past, he experienced heart failure and an illness called acute Wernicke's encephalopathy, which messed with his speech and memory. As if that wasn't enough, Harwell also battled alcohol abuse throughout his life.

What led to his retirement was when he was seen slurring his words and making threatening comments to the audience in 2021 during an upstate New York concert.

A source claimed the musician had forgotten his lyrics and where he was due to having an episode. Days after the incident, Harwell officially announced his retirement, noting how he'd always wished to be a rock star since childhood.

The star said he was fortunate to have lived out his dream of performing at sold-out events and thanked his bandmates for all the years they performed together. The singer thanked their fans and noted how none of it would've been possible without them.

Harwell shared how hard he'd tried to "power through my physical and mental health issues" so he could play for them one last time but lamented about being unable to pull through.
The star has now been out of the band for two years, and his bandmates continue touring with Goode, while Hayes believes his legacy will live on through their music.

Luckily, in his last days, the San Jose, California, rock band frontman has someone dear looking out for him. Smash Mouth's manager, Robert Hayes, revealed that Harwell was resting back home while being cared for by hospice and his fiancée.

Until recently, the vocalist,56, was receiving treatment in a hospital. In the early 2000s, Harwell's band released some of the greatest hits, including "I'm a Believer," which was used as the soundtrack for the "Shrek."
