Miley Cyrus’ Marriage Ended In Less than a Year — She Revealed the Day She Knew It Was Over
- Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had an on-and-off relationship for ten years before they got married.
- Their marriage ended in less than a year, and rumors swirled about why they split.
- Cyrus has since revealed when she knew their union was over.
Miley Cyrus married Liam Hemsworth after dating for a decade. However, their romance was filled with ups and downs, and they found themselves in an on-and-off relationship for years.
The Hollywood pair met in 2009 while filming the romantic film, "The Last Song." But they broke up for the first time a year later, in August 2010.
An insider at the time disclosed Hemsworth was hindering Cyrus from focusing on her work. Adding more details about why they parted ways, the source said:
"Liam wanted more, but she's 17 and has other priorities right now. He's been a distraction."
Still, the two were pictured running errands together a month later, only to break up again two months down the line in November 2010.
Cyrus & Hemsworth's Rollercoaster Relationship
The actors' first breakup was only the beginning of their drama-filled romance. Two years later, in 2012, Hemsworth asked Cyrus to marry him after years of being on and off.
They later ended their engagement in September 2013, and during that period, Cyrus unfollowed her then-estranged partner on Twitter, sparking conversations about whether they would wed or not.
Reps officially confirmed their breakup, but the two rekindled their romance in 2015. This time around, they eventually got married, but the road to the aisle was not without drama.
Things were tense before the pair wed as they reportedly butted heads over a prenup that Cyrus suggested. An insider disclosed the duo engaged in "an explosive fight" and that Hemsworth was "deeply offended" by what his wife-to-be had brought up before tying the knot.
"He's a firm believer that prenups spoil the romance of a marriage and that if they are truly in love, it's not needed," said another source. The two were reportedly "screaming and in tears" while trying to reach an agreement.
Cyrus and Hemsworth faced another stumbling block months before their wedding when their Malibu home burned to the ground during the California wildfires. A source once revealed that the unfortunate incident brought them close to each other and that their bond deepened even more.
The couple eventually wed in December 2018 in an intimate ceremony at their home in Franklin, Tennesse. Cyrus shared wedding photos afterward showing her and her newly married husband Hemsworth locking lips and embracing.
One shot showed the groom wearing his wedding band, and the post's caption read: "10 years later...." a period when the two crossed paths.
Hemsworth & Cyrus' Messy Divorce – Infidelity Rumors
However, after over a year of marriage, Cyrus and Hemsworth ended their union. He filed for divorce from the songwriter in August 2019, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split. The movie star confirmed the breakup on his Instagram account in a lengthy statement, writing:
"[...] Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated, and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward."
A rep for the actress later released a statement revealing the pair had amicably decided to end their marriage, adding, "[...] They have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers."
Shortly after the divorce announcement, insiders from Hemsworth's side claimed Cyrus had cheated on him, but she refuted the claims on Twitter. She stated that although she had been unfaithful in the past, her marriage did not end because of infidelity. In another tweet, the star said she had "nothing to hide."
Meanwhile, sources from her side shared different stories. They claimed that she and Hemsworth split because he drank a lot and was using drugs – while she tried her best to salvage the union but that his actions became the dealbreaker.
Moreover, in November 2019, Cyrus' former sister-in-law, Elsa Pataky, married to Chris Hemsworth, commented on their split in an interview.
She said her brother-in-law had been devastated after the divorce news as he spent a decade invested in his relationship with the "Flowers" hitmaker. "He's a strong boy, and he deserves the best, I think he deserves much more," said Pataky.
Hemsworth and Cyrus' divorce was finalized in January 2020. According to legal documents at the time, the exes had no joint assets, and neither of them sought spousal support.
In November of that year, the former Disney star released her seventh studio record called "Plastic Hearts," which she announced the month prior on her Instagram. It features several songs about her ex-husband Hemsworth, including one titled "Never Be Me."
The track delves into the speculations that she cheated on the "Isn't It Romantic" star (and vice versa). The lyrics read, "But if you're looking for stable, that'll never be me / If you're looking for faithful, that'll never be me."
Cyrus released another song about her relationship with Hemsworth in January 2023 called "Flowers." Some fans believe the music video referenced a secret fling he had with his "Hunger Games" co-star Jennifer Lawrence while married to Cyrus.
However, Lawrence rubbished the claims of being romantically involved with Hemsworth while he was married to the former child star. During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live!" Andy Cohen asked her about the rumors, and the actress said:
"Not true. Not true. Total rumor."

In the same interview, Lawrence referenced her previous appearance on the show in 2015, where she admitted that she and Hemsworth once kissed off-screen and described him as "real hot." In her recent appearance on the chat show, the "No Hard Feelings" star explained that she and Hemsworth locked lips years after he and Cyrus broke up.
Meanwhile, Cyrus spoke candidly about her decision to part ways with Hemsworth in a TikTok video. The talented star revealed she knew that she had to end things with him the day she had to perform at the Pyramid stage during the Glastonbury Festival in June 2019.
Cyrus further explained that their commitment to each other came from a place of love and shared trauma before adding, "The day of the show was the day that I had decided it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship."
