Man Blames Little Daughter for Her Mother’s Death, Leaving Her Older Brother to Care For Her
A young man's parents had no interest in raising him to have a close relationship with them. When they finally had another child, his mother did not survive to see her grow up. The man took over raising his little sister.
A young man was born when his parents were still in high school. Because of his birth, his parents had been kicked out of their family homes and resented him for the life they had to live.
The man's mother dropped out of school to care for him, and his father stayed in school and worked two jobs until he got his GED and could move them into their own home after living with his mother's older sister.

Although the family's living situation improved, the man felt that his parents blamed him for ruining their lives and, as such, never formed a close relationship with him.
How Did the Man's Parents Treat Him?
As the man grew up, his parents were distant. When he misbehaved, they would tell him they had ruined their lives for him, and he still acted out. They did not show him much love even when he wasn't misbehaving.

The man rarely got new clothing or gifts from his parents. They only got him one small gift on special occasions, like his birthday or some other type of celebration.
Even when the family was celebrating the man's birthday, he would get one small cupcake and a small gift, which was rarely the item he had requested. All the man wanted was his parents' love.

As much as he wanted his mother and father's love, as he grew older, he realized he would never get it, so he stopped trying. But around the time he stopped looking for their attention, his parents began to give it.
The man saw that his parents were trying harder, but because he had already given up on a relationship with them, he was not interested in the newfound love they had to give and found their attention awkward.

Although he did not hate his parents, the man felt "neutral" toward them and their love. He saw them as strangers who had paid no attention to him when he was a little boy, and yet he felt forced to spend quality time with them. However, the most heartbreaking parts were still to come.
What Happened to the Man?
When the man was 18, his mother fell pregnant again, and he noticed she had stopped paying attention to him. He thought this might be because she and his father had a new child to start over with. However, he shared:
"When I turned 19, my mother gave birth to a girl, but due to some complications, she didn't end up surviving; this crushed my father; not only did he begin to resent me for not being as sad as he was over her death, she was barely a mother to me so there wasn't much to be sad over, but he also blamed his daughter for 'killing' his wife."

After the man's mother died, his father was never home. One day, he returned from college to find his sister screaming out in hunger as she sat in a dirty diaper. He knew then that he would have to step in for her.
Although the man asked his father to help, the older man consistently suggested they drop the little girl off at the fire station. The man put all that aside and was there for his sister, who he thought was adorable and loved very much.

When she was old enough, the man enrolled his sister in daycare and began taking night classes to further his career. He also ensured he spent quality time with the little girl. After a while, the man's little sister began calling him "Daddy."
While the man made sure his little sister always knew her real father, he didn't stop her from calling him "Daddy" if it made her comfortable. The little girl's relationship with her birth father was strained after she tried following him around for his attention, and he snapped at her, frightening her.

However, one day, the man's father got a girlfriend and began acting differently toward his daughter, wanting to spend time with her and build a relationship. The man supported this and tried to foster the relationship between his father and his sister.

He even allowed his father to attend the birthday party he had planned for the little girl after his father's girlfriend suggested they attend. While at the party, the little girl opened her gifts and found that her brother had gifted her an electric car. He shared:
"She screamed and hugged me, yelling how she loved me and called me Daddy."
Later that day, when the little girl was asleep, the man's father asked him why his sister had called him "Daddy." The man explained that he had raised her and had been a father figure to her.
After that, the man's father made more of an effort with his daughter, but the man said he selfishly didn't want their relationship to improve and would try to get full custody of her.
Netizens who found the story on Reddit shared their advice and opinions with the man. One thought his father was only trying to build a relationship with the little girl because of his new girlfriend and that it wasn't a genuine interest.
Another said it was common for men to pull on women's heartstrings by saying how hard life was for them as parents and that their relationship with their child was strained because of someone else.
One user felt that the man's father expected the little girl to crave his love and attention as much as the man had when he was younger. The user said the difference was that the little girl had her brother's love and attention and didn't crave it from anywhere else. Another said:
"I know how she feels. I call someone "daddy” who isn't my biological father. He was there for me, raised me, treated me no different than his other daughters, and for that, there's nothing I wouldn't do for him."
While this man stepped up for his sister as a father, another family was shocked when they adopted a little girl who turned out to be someone close to them. Read the full story here.
