Keaton realized her love for performance when she was seven years old. She remembered seeing her mother get crowned as Mrs. Highland Park and instantly knew that she wanted to be on stage.

So it is no surprise that the actress has been in many iconic record-breaking movies such as "The Godfather II," "Father of the Bride" and more. This year alone, Keaton starred in two films, "Maybe I do," and "Book Club: The Next Chapter."

Despite all the success she had in her professional life, the idea of getting married was not one she pondered a lot. The "Something's Gotta Give" actress has dated many Hollywood stars, including Al Pacino, Woody Allen, and Warren Beatty.

None of the romances ended up in marriage, to the point where the actress chose to give up on tying the knot, content in being single.

Why Did Diane Keaton Never Get Married?

Keaton has admitted that dating was not at the top of her list, or rather, the dates she had been to did not feel like real dates. In one of her recent interviews, she revealed, "I don't date. Highly unlikely. I don't remember anyone calling me, going, 'This is So-and-So, I'd like to take you out.' They don't happen. Of course not."

When the actress was asked when the last time she went on a date was, she insinuated that she never felt like she was dating. Then she shockingly revealed that she had not been on a proper date in almost 15 years. The actress joked that all the men she was with got tired of her quirks, but she clarified that she was doing fine.

Growing up, Keaton had always been inspired by her mother, Dorothy. Just like she was the inspiration behind her career choice, she believed she was the reason for her skepticism around marriage.

Keaton was the oldest of four children, and she watched her mother become a homemaker while her father constantly worked. The "Baby Boom" star saw her mother live in the glory of becoming Mrs. Highland Park and how she had let it go after they moved to Santa Ana.

She knew her mother loved to try out new things, but she also watched her sacrifice most of her interests for her family. So, Keaton knew early on that she was not going to let anything come between her and her independence.

But if she opted for a more simple answer of why she never married, outside of her fear of losing herself, Keaton joked that she never received a marriage proposal.

Marriage might not have been in the books for the actress, but she decided to embark on motherhood later on in life; again, her mother was one of the reasons behind her perspective on being a single mother.

Diane Keaton's Journey into Motherhood

Keaton raved about her mother's multiple talents. Dorothy was a photographer, potter, and diarist, which inspired some of Keaton's memoirs and essay collections.

Unfortunately, Dorothy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1993. The actress then adopted her first child, a daughter, in 1996. Four years later, she brought home her son, Duke.

The actress had her plate full taking care of her mother, being a mom of two, and juggling her demanding career. Helping her mother through Alzheimer's until she died in 2008 and dealing with her brother's death in 2021 gave her a newfound appreciation and respect for the work that goes into being a single mother.

Although Keaton has clarified that being single worked well for her, she still candidly shared that having a partner would have been the best possible situation for raising children. But she does everything to give her children everything they need.

Keaton also confessed that she believed her relationships did not work because of how she responded to men throughout her life. She realized that having a companion took a lot of work, and those who have that are lucky.

Nonetheless, life as a single mother has also been fulfilling for her. In fact, the older she gets, the more she's confused about why people claim age slows a person down.

A typical day for Keaton starts off with feeding the dogs and the horses. From there, she heads over to her office, one of her favorite places, because the work she gets done sets the tone for how the rest of the day will turn out.

As someone who has such simple days, Keaton struggles to receive compliments labeling her an iconic actress in the industry. In one interview, she admitted that she did not know what made her iconic. "I live with myself, and I'm hardly iconic. I get up in the morning, and it's me again," she said.

Keaton might not know how to take on compliments, but she loves giving them to other fellow actors. In another interview, she raved about how "magical and entertaining and unique" Al Pacino was.

The actress mentioned that she had many male friends, but none turned into dates. In the meantime, Keaton enjoys life on her own and continues adding to her iconic Hollywood profile.
