Despite their son's fame, Jason Derulo's parents have led lives out of the public eye, bar a handful of public appearances. However, the singer has spoken about what it was like to grow up in a Haitian household to two parents who worked hard to provide for their family.

Jason Derulo rarely speaks about his father but often opens up about his mother. The singer was not only inspired by his mother's hard work but also her impressive work ethic.

Jason Derulo's Mother Is Very Supportive of His Career

When Derulo was 4, he saw Michael Jackson perform for the first time and knew then he wanted to be an entertainer, and his mother supported his decision. "(I) said, 'Mom, I want to be him,' and she was like, 'Yeah, OK, baby,'" the singer recalled when he told his mother of his dreams.

Derulo has since gone on to have a successful career with multiple chart-topping songs, and in 2014, his mother was by his side at the MTV Video Music Awards in Inglewood. Growing up, Derulo watched his mother attend Law school, work two jobs, and come home to cook dinner for her children.

During an interview, the singer revealed his mother was also very philanthropic, which rubbed off on her son. Derulo shared, "My mom would fill up these bags with clothes we didn't feel we needed, and I'm like, Why are we doing this?'Then we get to a location, and we're giving our clothes to the less fortunate."

Derulo and Frumes' son only celebrated his second birthday earlier this year.

In May 2019, in honor of Mother's Day, Derulo took to Instagram to share a picture of him, his mother, and his siblings — who work with him and keep him grounded — and shared in part, "We were never perfect children but that didn't mean we didn't have a PERFECT MOTHER."

A few months later, Derulo's mother made another rare appearance on her son's social media and wore a beaming smile as she posed for the camera in her son's embrace. In the caption, the singer revealed he had taken his mom to Catch in Los Angeles.

Jason Derulo on Why He Named His First Son after Himself

A few years after humorously revealing during an interview that he went from wanting around seven children to two thanks to his nieces and nephews, Derulo and the mother of his child, Jena Frumes, welcomed their first child, a son, in 2021. Jason Derulo's son is named after him, and the singer explained:

"I wanted my name to continue to thrive, and I also thought that it would bring me closer to him."

Derulo and Frumes' son only celebrated his second birthday earlier this year. However, his famous father already has big plans to leave a legacy for his son and encourage him to dream big, like his father did.

"Even if a dream is farfetched, never let [your children] believe that you think it's farfetched. The more that we are able to feed our children's dreams, the more likely they're gonna happen," Derulo said.
