- Years later, her child won in "American Idol" and became a huge star.
The Oklahoma-born little girl in the cover photo on the right grew up to be an incredibly successful musical superstar. Throughout the trajectory of her illustrious career, she has soared to great heights and made her mark as a prominent icon in country music.
Though she may be living a life of fame, glitz, and glam now, the musical talent came from humble beginnings. Growing up as one of three sisters in the small town of Checotah, Oklahoma, she always had the support and love of her devoted and doting parents.
Even though she grew up to be incredibly famous, the sweet-natured singer remains humble and never forgets where she came from to this day. In fact, after becoming a world-renowned star, she visited her old high school a couple of years back with an interviewer who was profiling her.
While taking the interview crew for a tour around her old stomping grounds, they came across the Fine Arts wing with a plaque outside dedicating the wing to the singer. Down to earth as she is, the singer revealed her apprehensions about the recognition:
"...I actually fought this for a long time...I was like, 'I don't know how I feel about that, but...yeah, I don't know...it's just me, uhm, but I get it; it's really cool. I'm honored...Hopefully, people look at it, and they're like, 'Oh, that's a good reminder that you know, somebody came from here and, uhm, is successful.' "
The star went on to express how much she enjoys coming back home, especially to visit her parents, who still live in her hometown. As far as how she became a huge success story, her parents always did their best to nurture her natural knack for singing, especially her mother, who would ensure her daughter always brought her A-game whenever she performed.
Back To The Beginning: From a Little Girl Whose Mom Used to Sew Her Costumes to a Country Icon
The country icon and her doting mom are none other than country music legend Carrie Underwood, 40, and her mama bear, Carole Underwood. Going back to where it all started, the country star and her family lived in a quaint town where everyone knew each other.
As a mother, Carole described herself as somewhat strict; however, she downplayed that statement after she said her sister (aka Carrie's aunt) laughed when she referred to herself as a disciplinarian.
As the youngest child of three, by the time Carrie grew into a coherent little person, her older sisters had already moved away from home. As a result, her mom said she was basically raised as an only child.
Lo and behold, Carrie winded up taking the "American Idol" title in 2005 and has since catapulted to new heights of achievements.
During her younger years, Carrie started performing in local talent shows. At the time, Carole knew the head of the Chamber of Commerce who was responsible for hosting the shows, and she would ask him to allow Carrie to participate. Interestingly enough, according to her mom, Carrie initially was not all that fond of performing in the talent shows:
"...she hated it because her friends were gonna be out there, and she didn't like to sing in front of her friends, and sometimes it was like, she might be crying before she would get up there and sing, but she did."
However, her shyness concerning not wanting her friends to see her sing did not keep the young go-getter from nailing every performance. As Mama Carole put it:
"...I mean, she just truly had a gift from God. She did..."
Not only did she have a natural talent for singing, but Carrie was also in the know about old-school music her older sisters would listen to. Though she may not have known all the lyrics, Carole said she would even make up her own words in place of the ones she didn't know.

Whenever Carrie would perform in the local talent shows, Carole would always make sure her little performer would have something dazzling to wear. According to the "Jesus, Take the Wheel" singer:
"My mom would sew my outfits for talent shows. She would get material from Walmart..."
Carole also confirmed this in a past interview, looking back on those endearing moments fondly. Even though her baby girl became a singing icon, Carole admitted that her daughter's superstardom was unexpected because she thought singing was just something Carrie liked to do.
In this mode of thinking, apparently, Carole and Carrie made some sort of pact that the budding star would obtain a degree from college aside from singing. Carrie graduated with a Mass Communication degree before auditioning for "American Idol."

For that reason, Carole said she wanted Carrie to go ahead with auditioning for the competition show. She actually thought the opportunity would garner her daughter some name and face recognition so she could pursue becoming an anchor or something akin to it.
When Carrie scored a place on the hit TV show, her mom disclosed how she would get nervous on Tuesdays and Wednesdays because that's when her daughter would perform her songs. Of her experience watching her daughter thrive on television, Carole divulged:
"...I always had to pray that she would be able to hit that high note and that she would carry the tune like it was supposed to be. It was just harrowing for me..."

Carole is not the only one proud of Carrie. The people of her hometown, to whom her mom says Carrie has contributed a lot, are also incredibly proud.

Carrie Underwood's Parents Aren't Interested in the Flashy Lifestyle that Comes with Being Famous
As far as how Carrie's proud parents' lives have changed since their daughter became famous, Carrie shared that they still pretty much live the same way they did when she was a kid. Of her parents still living in the same house and being the same people they were all those years ago, the musician shared:
"My parents are really great people who want nothing to do with any of this."
Carrie said that even though she wants to splurge on her parents and spoil them, her mom and dad won't let her. She previously told a story of how her protective dad got angry about her buying him a $400 generator that he had been wanting, and she ended up getting in trouble for her purchase.

Despite her parents not wanting to reap the rewards of her success, Carrie spoke about how she still finds ways to do stuff for them regardless of their humility, like taking Carole to award shows with her.
Carrie has always reiterated how lucky she has been to be blessed with incredibly loving and supportive parents and remains grateful for them and all they have done for her.
