Aveiro served in the military for Portugal, engaging in conflict in Angola and Mozambique as a young soldier. During this period, he was accompanied by his childhood friend, Alberto Martins, who also served as a soldier.

After experiencing the challenges of a hostile environment during his deployment to the African continent, Aveiro underwent profound changes. Upon returning to their home country with Martins after the war, Aveiro found himself taking on sporadic odd jobs and engaging in excessive drinking.

A news outlet covering Aveiro's story reported that the late father of the football star frequently relied on friends to cover his alcohol expenses whenever he ran out of money. Regrettably, Aveiro's struggle to overcome the aftermath of his wartime experiences and his subsequent battle with alcoholism had detrimental effects on his relationships with both his son and his wife.

In a documentary chronicling Ronaldo's life, it was disclosed that Aveiro subjected his wife to physical abuse. While he didn't physically harm his son, their relationship became strained. Ronaldo's mother attested that the war had hardened Aveiro, transforming him into an angry man.

Despite his optimism about the future, Ronaldo remains somber about the reality that Aveiro will never witness his ongoing successes.

Discussing his father's behavior under the influence, Ronaldo mentioned that Aveiro would be humorous, sharing stories and singing. However, due to Aveiro's daily alcohol consumption, it became progressively challenging for his son to engage in meaningful conversations and develop a deeper understanding of him. Ronaldo revealed:

"He was a drunk person. And when that happens, it's not easy to have a conversation...I'm not ashamed to say it, I didn't really get to know my father for real, from the heart, to open up and tell him things..."

On another occasion, Ronaldo admitted to not knowing his father that well, partly due to his drinking problem. "I never spoke with him like a normal conversation. It was hard ...[sic]," he added.

Regrettably, Ronaldo's opportunities to forge a deeper connection with his father were cut short. Aveiro succumbed to alcoholism, passing away when his son was only 20 years old. Of the possible reason why his dad drank so heavily during his life, the football legend expressed:

"...I don't know! Maybe he was frustrated with life...I don't know and I don't care..."

Ronaldo expressed hurt and disappointment at his father's actions, which prevented them from having a close bond. According to him:

"...obviously I wanted a different father...a dad who could be more present to see my achievements. That's what frustrates me the most..."

Cristiano Ronaldo Still Has Love for His Father and Now Has a Beautiful Family of His Own

Ronaldo is saddened by the reality that Aveiro never had the opportunity to witness his success, both as a football player and a father himself. Nevertheless, the complexities of their relationship and Aveiro's inability to fully embrace the role of being a father did not diminish the deep love he harbored for his son.

In fact, his childhood friend Martins confirmed that Aveiro would constantly brag about his son even before he became famous and established his name in the football world. Aveiro would boast:

"My son will be the best player in the world."

Similarly, Ronaldo's expression of frustrations with his late father doesn't negate the love he held for Aveiro. When Aveiro faced liver failure, his son went to great lengths to attempt to save his life, including arranging for a private air ambulance to transport him to England for treatment.

Even in the midst of the life-and-death struggle in the hospital, despite the strain in their relationship, Ronaldo made the effort to visit his father. This further underscores the unspoken yet unconditional love that persisted between the two.

In 2019, during a sit-down interview, Piers Morgan played a previous clip of Ronaldo's father discussing him and their family a year before his passing. In the clip, Aveiro commended his family and friends, expressing how fantastic they were. Notably, he spoke about his son and expressed immense pride in Ronaldo's achievements.

Despite his optimism about the future, Ronaldo remains somber about the reality that Aveiro will never witness his ongoing successes. Nonetheless, he recognizes:

"...it is what it is, I—maybe I get everything in the football because he's in the sky [sic]..."

To keep his father's memory close, Ronaldo maintains his ashes in his home. He shared that he has positioned them alongside his ashes of his late son, engaging in conversations with them regularly.

Now, Ronaldo is a father himself, raising his children with Rodriguez, whom he deems a fantastic person and whom he is passionately in love with. Regarding his role as a father, Ronaldo deems the following values essential to instill in his children:

"You have to be humble, you have to work hard, you have to respect the people...and...you add healthy environment around your house..."

Ronaldo further conveyed his desire to be recognized as the "cool dad" among his children. When the interviewer humorously mentioned the inevitable stage where kids may not perceive their parents as cool, Ronaldo acknowledged the possibility.

Nevertheless, the professional athlete assured Morgan that he would be well-prepared for that phase and, in fact, eagerly anticipates witnessing his kids grow and flourish to the extent of forming their own families one day.
