Walter "Radar" O'Reilly, portrayed by Gary Burghoff in "M*A*S*H," remains an iconic character in television history. Throughout "M*A*S*H," fans witnessed Radar's evolution from a young, naive recruit to an integral part of the 4077th.
His character became a friend, confidant, and a source of wisdom for many. However, Gary Burghoff's departure from the show left many wondering why he chose to leave his beloved role behind.

Family Over Fame
The multifaceted Gary didn't prioritize wealth and fame above all else. He turned down lucrative offers and sitcom roles during the '80s, including a part on "Newhart." Instead, he chose a path that allowed him to spend more time with his family and focus on regional theater. It was a conscious decision driven by a deep sense of family commitment.

Gary's early work schedule on "M*A*S*H," which demanded 16-hour workdays, meant he missed significant moments in his first marriage with Janet. Regretting these lost years with his daughter, Gena, he recognized that one couldn't be both rich and famous and a devoted parent simultaneously. This realization led him to prioritize family over wealth and fame. He said:
"You either want to be rich and famous, or you want to be a daddy. You can't do both."

A Change in Career and Faith
In 1991, after leaving "M*A*S*H," Gary found himself unemployed. His transition into a born-again Christian around the time of his departure led him to seek guidance through prayer. An inner voice urged him to pick up a paintbrush, an activity he had enjoyed casually. This marked the beginning of his journey as an artist and a new source of income.

His remarkable canvases featuring North American wildlife began to sell for up to $25,000 each and were displayed in 15 galleries across the United States. Concurrently, he made a return to acting, starring in Neil Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" and hosting a public television series called "Pets: Part of the Family," focusing on animals and their owners. This was a conscious choice rooted in family values and delivering meaningful messages.
The Legacy Lives On
The legacy of Gary's values and family bond extends to his two sons, Miles and Jordan, and daughter, Gena. Tragically, in November 2019, he lost his wife of 32 years and mother to his two sons, Elisabeth Bostrom. Miles, an enthusiastic angler, developed a love for fishing from a young age. He shared a touching moment with his lovely daughter Rylee, who was born in March 2023.
Miles recently concluded the Bass Master Open season on the Harris Chain with a commendable 29th-place finish. Despite facing challenges throughout the season, he remained resilient and cashed checks in multiple events. The highlight of his year, however, was the opportunity to share the stage with his baby girl, Rylee, both donning matching tops.
Fans were captivated not only by Miles' fishing achievements but also by the adorable Rylee, commenting on her charming appearance and his commendable year of angling. One fan remarked, "Great job. Your daughter is adorable!" while another chimed in, saying, "Congratulations on still a great year of fishing and on becoming a father. She is adorable."

Miles' remarkable journey in the world of fishing mirrors his family's dedication to their passions, exemplifying the values instilled by Gary Burghoff.
