I Filed for Divorce from My Husband Because of the Gifts He Gave Me

A woman and her husband went to marriage counseling, and their therapist told them to find a way to express appreciation. They began exchanging gifts, but after a while, the wife noticed a worrying trend that made her consider divorce.

A woman who shared her story on Reddit and her husband had been together for five years and married for three when they entered marriage counseling. After their therapist suggested they needed to find ways to express their appreciation for one another, the husband said they should go out more and exchange gifts.

The woman agreed, and they began exchanging gifts and going out more regularly. It was going well for a while, and the woman shared that their relationship seemed to be improving because of it.

However, a short while later, the woman started noticing what her husband was doing and didn't like it. Although she was still in love with her husband, she knew she had to do something drastic.

The woman shared that, at first, her husband bought her fancy jewelry and expensive makeup that he knew she would want. However, after he gave her a necklace with his initials, she noticed something about his intentions.

Although the woman loved the necklace and never took it off, her husband warned her that if she ever took it off, it would show that she was ungrateful as he had bought it for her, and it had his initials on it.

A few weeks after he gifted her the necklace, the woman's husband bought her a backscratcher. However, the gift was much less for the woman and more for her husband. She explained that she scratched her husband's back every night, but it hurt her arm and chipped her nail polish.

The woman's husband bought her the backscratcher so that she could scratch his back for longer every day without it hurting her arm or chipping her nail polish. He went on to buy her cookbooks, appliances, and aprons so she would be a better cook and a sewing machine to sew his clothes with holes in them.

The man even bought his wife earplugs so he could play his guitar at maximum volume without her complaining. After receiving these gifts, the woman knew what she had to do about her marriage.

The woman tried to talk to her husband about the gifts he was giving her, saying that they were more for him than they were for her. Her husband called her names, threw things, yelled, and then stormed out of their house.

She shared that she had never seen him that mad, but when he did that, she saw the future of her relationship and realized she didn't want it anymore. She shared:

"I haven't stopped crying because when he gets back, I know what I have to do."

The woman waited until the early hours of the following day after their argument before her husband returned. He did not talk to her until she told him that she was filing for divorce.

Although her husband didn't argue with her about the divorce, he told her she was making a mistake. The woman's friend, a divorce attorney, told her she should not contact him for a while.

The woman moved in with her sister and was staying there until she figured out what was going on. She ended the post by saying that was the last update she would give on the situation.
