It came as a shock to many when Bruce Willis' family announced that the "Die Hard" actor suffered from aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), forcing him to retire from acting. His diagnosis affected his memory and his ability to communicate.
Often, aphasia is a result of a stroke. It causes communication problems, both verbal and written. Meanwhile, FTD symptoms include a change in behavior, depression, lack of social skills, apathy, and an unwillingness to talk. His family wrote:
"[...] Our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him."
In a recent interview with Drew Barrymore, Bruce's daughter Tallulah shared updates on her dad's condition. She revealed that one reason why the Willis family is so open about it is because they want to help others in the process.
Tallulah shared that while her dad's diagnosis has made things difficult for their family, they want to use their pain to help other people, especially since there isn't much information available about FTD. In one way, it's her way of making something beautiful from the unfortunate situation.
Nowadays, the "Armageddon" actor and his family have made it a habit to archive his things. Tallulah shared that although her dad is experiencing the effects of his diagnosis, he remains the same.
"He is the same, which I think in this regard I've learned is the best thing that you can ask for."
All Tallulah sees is love whenever she's around her dad. When she visits him, she brings photos of him from decades ago to look back at, and it's been an avenue for them to connect.
Whenever Tallulah sees pictures of her dad in his youth, she sees herself. And amidst everything going on, her coping mechanism has been to acknowledge the negative thoughts that come to her head.
By acknowledging her negative thoughts, Tallulah is able to set them aside rather than letting her emotions get the best of her. It allows her to be more present and ultimately will enable her to live her life despite everything happening around her.
Nowadays, the Willis family tries to make the most out of every moment they have with Bruce. His children have made it a point to spend time with him regularly, and to allow his grandchildren to spend time with him as well, making him a happy grandfather.
Bruce Willis is no longer totally verbal, according to those close to him. Despite this, his family and friends insist that he is still the Bruce they all once knew.
