Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been freed from prison after serving eight years for her role in the murder of her mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard. However, her former boyfriend, Nicholas "Nick" Godejohn, who killed Clauddine, is still locked up.
After Clauddine was murdered in 2015, Nicholas was sentenced to life in prison and was barred from the possibility of parole. Although he has no chance of being released, the prosecutors who worked on his case decided not to pursue the death penalty.

In 2019, Judge David Jones, who presided over his trial, denied the perpetrator's appeal for a new trial. This year, Gypsy talked about her ex and explained, "A condition of my parole is that I cannot have any contact with him, and I don't want contact."
The 32-year-old said: "I feel responsible for putting him in this situation. However, the acts [to] commit murder was on him as well. I mean, everybody has a choice, and he went through with his, and so he's paying his sentence..."
Godejohn and Gypsy Rose Blanchard first met through an online dating platform, and reportedly, the two fell in love and engaged in an undercover relationship for just over two years.
Gypsy's friend and neighbor, Aleah Woodmansee, whom she had confided in about her secret romance, revealed that she had initially thought that Gypsy's relationship was nothing more than a fantasy or dream.

Nonetheless, the former couple eventually met in person in March 2015. Far from approving their relationship, according to Gypsy, her mom "got jealous" because she was "spending a little too much attention on him."
Dee Dee ordered her daughter to stay away from Nicholas, and after enduring continuous abuse and trauma, Gypsy recalled feeling like she wanted to "escape her."
Less than 48 hours after police officials found Clauddine's body, Nicholas and Gypsy were arrested. Getting caught was something Gypsy said she never thought would happen.
When Nicholas spoke about why he decided to go through with killing Clauddine, the convict said, "I...did what I did because I loved her. I really wanted a life with her, I really did."
While Gypsy has been enjoying her newfound freedom with her doting husband, Ryan Scott Anderson, whom she hopes to start a family with, Nicholas remains in prison, serving his life sentence.
