It was the best thing that had ever happened to her. But then, without warning, everything changed, and that happiness was abruptly taken away.

A neighbor reported hearing a gunshot, and it was someone at the home who discovered Peter's body. Catherine vividly remembers the last time she and her daughters saw Peter.

"I think he wanted to say something to me then, [but] we didn't have time to say. The girls went off with him, and when they got out of the car, he said, 'Bye, I love you.' They said, 'Bye, dad,' and that was it. We never saw him again," the actress revealed.

In the immediate aftermath, Catherine sought refuge at a friend's house, as their home was overwhelmed by reporters and officials. She had to break the news to Laura and Sophia in a setting that was already fraught with confusion and grief.

"I was waiting for them at [my] friends' house. They thought the nanny was crying because maybe something had happened to one of their friends. When I told them [about] their dad, they... you can imagine what happened," she recalled.
