Speculations and Controversies

Simmons' retreat from the limelight fueled numerous rumors and speculations. Some close friends and associates feared that those around Simmons were controlling or manipulating him. Mauro Oliveira, Simmons' former masseur and assistant, came out to voice his concerns.

Oliveira worried that Simmons was being taken advantage of due to his weak mental state. He believed that Simmons' brother, manager, and live-in housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, were controlling Simmons' life.

"I feel that Richard is now being controlled by the very people that he controlled his whole life," Oliveira said. "Controlled in the sense that they are taking advantage of his weak mental state. They are controlling his mail, controlling his everything."

Other friends also shared stories of not having seen Simmons for years, adding to the speculation. Despite these claims, Simmons dismissed the rumors in 2016.

"No one should be worried about me," he stated. He explained that he chose a life of seclusion to focus on his health and personal well-being.

"I had hurt my knee and had some problems with it, and then the other knee started giving me trouble because I've taught like thousands and thousands of classes," he clarified. "Right now I just want to sort of take care of me."

Simmons assured fans that the people around him were wonderful and took great care of him. He dismissed the idea that Reveles was manipulating him, calling it "very silly." "Teresa has been with me for 30 years. It's almost like we're a married couple," he said.

His representative, Tom Estey, also denied the claims of manipulation, calling them "untrue and preposterous." He explained that Simmons was taking a break from the public eye after 40 years and working on projects behind the scenes.

Simmons had a message for his concerned fans, "I love them with my whole heart and soul. Don't worry, Richard's fine. You haven't seen the last of me. I'll come back strong."

Despite his assurances, Simmons stayed silent for another six years. In August 2022, he broke his silence with a simple note to his fans. His spokesperson said Simmons was "living the life he has chosen."

Simmons' brief message on Facebook read, "Thank you, everyone, for your kindness and love. Love, Richard." Estey confirmed that Simmons personally wrote the message, marking his first public communication in six years.
