'Joke of an Award': Users Slam Golden Globes Nominations List

The spotlight's on as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) unveils its 2025 Globes nominations, sparking buzz and debate over top films and stars.

The Golden Globes, organized by the HFPA, announced its 2025 nominations. While some social media users praised the selections, others criticized the awards for perceived favoritism and questioned their credibility.

"Golden Globes are a joke of an award," one user wrote bluntly. Another added, "Golden Globes are out of their minds." Some remarked, "There are clear favorites here. Some people always get nominated no matter how good/bad they are🧐."

High-profile stars Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez earned nods for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, with Grande nominated for "Wicked" and Gomez for "Emilia Perez." Both shared emotional responses to their nominations.

Grande wrote on Instagram Story that she was "floored" by the recognition. "It's impossible to find my words, but I am simply, so deeply grateful for this acknowledgement [sic]," she added. She also congratulated her co-star Cynthia Erivo and their team, describing it as a celebration of their work.

Gomez shared an emotional response on the same platform for her nomination. She also expressed pride in her co-star Zoe Saldaña, who is nominated in the same category alongside Grande.

Her excitement didn't stop there, as Gomez celebrated a second nomination for Best Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role in "Only Murders in the Building."

Adding to the celebration, she shared a heartfelt Instagram Story featuring her co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, who were nominated for Best Male Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The series itself earned a nomination for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Despite Grande and Gomez’s nominations, the results continue to spark controversy. One user criticized the lack of recognition for "Dune: Part 2" and "Challengers," arguing these films made a significant impact.

Another found the nominations predictable. Some also commented on unfamiliarity with many of the nominated films, raising concerns about their visibility and accessibility.

Specific nominees, like "Emilia Perez" drew criticism for perceived artistic shortcomings. One user cited repetitive songs, uninspired cinematography, and choreography, questioning whether it was truly awards-worthy.

Others expressed disappointment over snubs, including Hulu's "English Teacher," which they believed deserved recognition in the comedy categories.

Despite the criticism, some celebrated notable recognitions. "Absolutely love seeing Kate Winslet as a double nominee for The Regime and LEE [sic]," a fan commented, while another applauded, "Glad to see that The Substance has a number of deserved nominations although its not a comedy (but it does have funny moments) [sic]."

Amid the buzz and mixed reactions, the 82nd Annual Golden Globes, hosted by Nikki Glaser, will take center stage on January 5, 2025, airing live on CBS and Paramount+.
