Following his passing, Carter's son, Chip Carter, reflected on the former president's legacy, "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love."

Carter had spent much of the past year in hospice care at his home. Despite his declining health, he made meaningful appearances at a tribute service for Rosalynn in November 2023 and her private funeral in Plains the following day.

In accordance with tradition, the late former president will reportedly lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington for several days before being buried in a private ceremony in Plains, Georgia, alongside his wife.

His final resting place is the modest home the couple shared for decades. "Even in death, he hadn't forgotten the town," said Boze Godwin, a longtime friend and former mayor of Plains.
