In her post, Mellencamp revealed that she had been suffering from "severe and debilitating headaches" for several weeks. On Tuesday, the pain became unbearable, leading her to seek medical attention.

A CT scan and MRI confirmed the presence of multiple brain tumors, which doctors believe had been growing for at least six months.

Mellencamp shared that two of the tumors were scheduled for surgical removal on Wednesday. The remaining smaller tumors will be treated with radiation at a later date.

"I am blessed to be surrounded by my children, family, friends, doctors, nurses and surgeons who are doing everything possible to get me back into better health," she added.

Despite the diagnosis, Mellencamp expressed gratitude for the support she has received. She thanked everyone who had reached out to her and stood by her throughout this difficult time.

She also shared words from her father, "As my dad said this am, god only gives hard stuff to those of us who can handle it. It's a hard day but I have faith and amazing surgeons and know everything will be ok."

Another post showed her preparing for the operation by having a friend shave her hair. In the video, she jokingly said in an accented voice, "I'm going to have this look on my bucket list. My best look." The in-lay text on the clip read, "All I need now is an umbrella."

Mellencamp was not alone as she faced the procedure. A final post before surgery captured her surrounded by loved ones, including her co-star Kyle Richards. In the video, she turned the camera to her friends and asked, "Here we go. How many minutes? What's the countdown?" before hearing that she had 10 minutes until surgery began.

Mellencamp has been vocal about her ongoing battle with melanoma, a form of skin cancer. In a September 13, 2023, Instagram post, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with another melanoma, stating she had lost count of whether it was her "12th or 13th one."

"I have been debating whether I should even publicly talk about this or not but then I remember how every time I post about skin cancer someone else is reminded to get checked," she wrote.

She described sleepless nights and anxiety over the diagnosis but remained determined to move forward. "As I lay here with tears in my eyes and worry, I know my kids will be up soon. I have a podcast at 10. Life goes on," she continued, reminding herself and others, "We can do hard things."

Alongside her message, Mellencamp posted images of her scars from past melanoma surgeries. One of the photos featured a close-up of her back, with an arrow pointing to a dark spot among several surgical scars.

"We have so many beautiful things to look forward to, so if you woke up today feeling lost or scared, I encourage you to make a list of some of the things you are truly grateful for and what you are most excited about... We have got this. Love to you all. We are not alone," she concluded her post.

Just three months later, on December 27, 2023, Mellencamp shared an update following a successful procedure. "Surgery went well!" she wrote, explaining that she underwent a wide excision melanoma, soft tissue defect reconstruction with adjacent tissue rearrangement.

She described the procedure as doctors cutting out part of her shoulder and replacing it with a flap of skin from her back. "But the pain and discomfort are all worth it," she added.

Mellencamp also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she had received. "The outpouring of love and prayers in the comments and DMs has left me speechless (which is tough). I wish I could respond to everyone but please know I am forever grateful."

She ended the post with a strong message, "Please get your skin checked. I promise you do not want to go through this."

Despite the challenges, Mellencamp remains hopeful as she undergoes treatment. With the support of family, friends, and medical professionals, she is taking each step with determination.
