Karoline Leavitt stepped into the role of White House press secretary, becoming the youngest person ever to hold the position and navigating its intense pressures with remarkable composure.

During the first half of her tenure, she gave birth to her first child, Nicholas "Niko" Robert Riccio, in July. Despite a difficult delivery, she returned to work just four days later, after witnessing an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump on live television.

"I had just brought my newborn, my three-day-old baby home from the hospital. And I said, 'I'm going to turn on the television and watch the rally today,'" Leavitt recalled. Seeing her coworkers flee bullets and duck into SUVs, she told her husband, "Looks like I'm going back to work."

Leavitt credits her husband, Nicholas Riccio, and her mother for helping her balance the demands of her role. For her, her day often starts around 4 a.m., packed with media appearances, campaign calls, and briefings, while she manages nursing and cares for her newborn — a daily demonstration of extraordinary multitasking and dedication.

Riccio's own story reflects perseverance. Growing up in poverty after his parents' divorce, moving frequently, and even living on the streets as a teen, he worked his way through college while sometimes sleeping in his car. Those experiences helped shape the steadfast support he brings to Leavitt amid the demands of Washington life.

Despite the intense schedule, she treasures personal milestones. Photos from her family's first Halloween showed her son in a pumpkin costume alongside her and Riccio, both wearing coordinated black outfits. On her son's first birthday, she also reflected on the joy he has brought to her life, expressing gratitude for being his mother.

From Humble Beginnings to the White House

While Leavitt thrives in the public spotlight today, her upbringing in a politically neutral household in New Hampshire — where her family still operates a small ice cream stand and a used truck shop — laid the groundwork for her interest in politics, which she pursued in college while attending on a softball scholarship.

She later shared these early experiences on "The Megyn Kelly Show," explaining how they shaped her path to the White House. Growing up in the first-in-the-nation primary state exposed her to political processes early, and she quickly became captivated by news, media, and government.

She met her husband during a congressional campaign in New Hampshire through a mutual friend. Despite a 32-year age difference, Riccio has been a steadfast supporter of her career, offering hands-on help with their son and providing stability amid chaotic periods of her professional and personal life.

Even in the public eye, Leavitt has celebrated family life — from Easter egg rolls at the presidential headquarters to intimate wedding photos shared on social media — highlighting her ability to balance high-profile responsibilities with personal moments.

Her disciplined schedule, resilience, and strong support system have allowed her to excel as the youngest press secretary in the Oval Office. On the show, she further recalled realizing she held that distinction only after the president's official announcement:

"I didn't realize that until after the announcement came out when the president officially named me and put out the statement, and I saw that on the news myself."

Leavitt's story reflects a new model of political leadership, where youth, family, and intense professional pressure intersect. She demonstrates a determined, multitasking figure capable of handling historic political events while navigating the delicate first months of parenthood.

Her balancing act extends beyond motherhood and campaign duties. Her bold, unfiltered communication style has also drawn attention, most recently when a cheeky exchange with a political reporter went viral on social media.

On October 20, 2025, Leavitt posted a screenshot on X of a private SMS thread between herself and HuffPost correspondent S. V. Dáte, which had been mentioned in one of his articles some days earlier.

The exchange, which stemmed from a question about U.S.-Russia diplomacy, caused an uproar online as Leavitt responded with a line more often heard on a schoolyard than from behind the White House podium.

A Question on Russia Turns Into a Viral Punchline

The conversation reportedly took place on October 16, when Dáte reached out via text to ask why the White House had selected Budapest as the location for a potential Ukraine ceasefire meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The question wasn't random. It referenced the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which Ukraine surrendered its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal in exchange for assurances from Russia, the U.S., and the U.K. that its territorial sovereignty would be respected.

Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion in 2022 make Budapest a controversial choice.

Per the screenshot, Leavitt's reply to Dáte's inquiry — "Who suggested Budapest?" — was brief and loaded, "Your mom did."

When Dáte pressed further, asking if she was attempting humor, Leavitt responded by calling out his journalistic integrity and instructed him not to text her again with his "biased" inquiries. On her X post, Leavitt also added a caption further putting into question the reporter's professional motives.

The Huffington Post Is Scared

This conversation had been revealed days earlier, on October 17. Dáte had published a HuffPost article that detailed his questions, the answers, and the surrounding context without providing the screenshot.

He also allegedly received a similar response from White House Communications Director Steven Cheung. Therefore, Dáte ended the report with:

"HuffPost is devastated, and is fearful of asking any more questions, let alone escalating with 'I'm rubber, you're glue,' or some such."

Divided Reactions Highlight Tensions in Politics and the Press

Leavitt's bold reply drew immediate reaction. Many found it refreshing, even hilarious. One person on X wrote, "SAVAGE!!! 😂" Another added, "Savage!! Love this!!"

"I was hoping there was a video of this, but I guess it was just a text. Sigh. Still hilarious, thanks for sharing!" someone commented. "I'm just thankful that I'm not the only one still using mom jokes!! That was epic!!!" another chimed in.
